The Last Kingdom season 5 ending explained and recap
Things to remember before Seven Kings Must Die
Inside Bebbenburg, Uhtred faced his cousin. He managed to kill his cousin and take back Bebbenburg. He then made a deal with Constantin for a longer peace. It wouldn’t be one that Edward would like.
It turned out that Uhtred made the promise not to acknowledge Edward as King of Northumbria. Sure, he would acknowledge Edward as King of the Saxons, but Northumbrian lands and especially Bebbenburg lands would remain neutral. It would stop the consistent wars between England and Scotland to lay claim over Northumbria.
Edward definitely wasn’t happy. It certainly sets things up for The Last Kingdom movie, which is currently filming. Edward’s look of anger made it clear that he would fight to take down Uhtred due to this perceived betrayal.
We then get some flashforwards as well as flashbacks. The flashforwards show that Aethelstan is still with Uhtred learning to fight, Edward’s other son Aelfweard is locked away for his betrayal, and Edward’s new wife gives birth to their child (it’s not confirmed if son or daughter). Aelfwynn was reunited with her love, and Aelswith makes it clear that she’s staying in Bebbenburg with Uhtred and Eadith. In Scotland, Constantin is clearly not sticking to his word and looking to invade.
After an exceptionally strong final season, The Last Kingdom‘s final moments make it clear there is still a story to tell. However, even as a final season, this would have worked well. The writers could have skipped the flashfowards and just focused on the flashbacks to help us say goodbye to the series.
There was also a very special moment with Hild at the end. She walked the beaches near Bebbenburg with a young man called Osbert. She had heard he wanted to know about his family, and she wanted to bring him to see someone who would know something. Oh yes, this is that missing son of Uhtred!
Who is Aethelstan?
Aethelstan, played by Harry Gilby, is the son of King Edward, played Timothy Innes, and Ecgwynn, played by Julia Brown. Aethelstan is the rightful heir to the throne when Edward dies, which we know happens in Seven Kings Must Die.
