Netflix Obsession episode 4 recap: A shocking end

Jay follows his father to Anna’s flat and calls Ingrid outside before going inside. Anna and William are having sex on the living room floor, and Jay can hear them moaning outside. He busts down the door and walks in, horrified by what he sees. As he backs up to the railing, Jay slips and falls over the side of it, plummeting to his death. But did he really slip and fall? Or did Jay intentionally commit suicide? It’s left up to the audience’s interpretation.

Obviously, Jay’s death is horrifying, and it changes everything. Anna gets dressed and rushes out of the building while William remains, cradling his son’s dead body as the cops and EMTs arrive. When he returns home, he finds Ingrid inconsolable, banging her head against a cupboard as Sally pleads with her.

Both of them are disgusted by William and his actions. Ingrid reveals Jay called her beforehand, and their marriage disintegrates on the spot. She later says she wishes that William had killed himself instead, as she’d survive burying him more than she would her son.

Despite everything, William is present at Jay’s funeral. Ingrid’s father says the one good thing about Jay trying to emulate his dad all his life is that he became nothing like him. After the funeral, Ingrid yells at William to leave, saying she never wants to see him again. But while there, he does see Elizabeth again. She implies that Jay’s death was a suicide, but William says that’s not true. I’m not sure Elizabeth believes him.

Elsewhere, Anna stays with her mother while things simmer down. Elizabeth reveals in conversation that she knew what Aston was doing to Anna all those years. She says she didn’t stop it because she thought they were both happy. Anna points out that she was just a child. She’s horrified by her mother’s admission.

Anna flees and goes on a self-destructive spiral. She goes on her planned honeymoon without Jay, flirting with another married man and then going to a party where she intends to hook up with someone else. However, the guy quickly gets violent and pushy. Unable to exert control, Anna pushes him off before he can rape her.

She and William meet up one final time for closure’s sake. William tells her that he would do it all over again, including meeting her and having the affair, which is kind of insane considering his son died. Anna is like, “Uh yeah, I wish I never met you.” I don’t blame her. The whole thing is a mess, but William seems remorseless.

Back in London, Anna calls Peggy for comfort and later sells her flat, which William buys because, of course, he does. He finds her diary stowed away in the fireplace and reads it.

In the end, there is a time jump. Anna is now in therapy. The therapist mentions “establishing some rules” if that makes her more comfortable, which immediately triggers Anna’s memory. “How strange,” she murmurs.
