The Queen’s Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit is a cinematic masterpiece that follows the story of a young orphaned girl named Beth, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. While confined to an orphanage’s mundanity, the janitor, who routinely plays chess in the basement, introduces Beth to the game. Not long after, it is discovered that Beth has exceptional talent and grows up to be a chess prodigy, competing in various tournaments worldwide.

This show takes its focal point to the extremes, exploring Beth’s addiction and deep-diving topics of mental health, gender roles, feminism, and the pursuit of excellence. Subsequently, this Netflix limited series left me hyped. Watching the underdog become a feared opponent, all while anchoring to real-life issues in real-time, left many viewers, including myself, with a sense of motivation and gratitude for being able to achieve in the face of adversity.

Midnight Mass

As my personal favorite on this list, Midnight Mass was the most profoundly disturbing, unsettling, and thought-provoking Netflix limited series I’ve ever watched.

Set on an eerie island community called Crockett Island, inhabitants begin experiencing deeply unnerving phenomena after a mysterious priest named Father Paul arrives and begins providing service at their local church. As the community becomes more involved, horrible dark secrets about the priest and the inexplainable phenomena start to unravel in one of the most comprehensive tales of horror ever experienced.

The show even does a fantastic job at suspending you in its most emotionally driven scenes utilizing superb audio immersion, earning them an Emmy nomination. As if that weren’t enough, the story explores the polarizing concepts of fanaticism and faith in a way that will haunt you. You’ve been warned: this Netflix limited series will stick with you.
