It’s officially a holiday weekend, everyone! Today, April 7, marks Good Friday, a special day celebrated by the Christian Church. Traditionally, people who celebrate participate in fasting today ahead of Easter on Sunday. It can be a major holiday for many people, with today marking the holy day for penance. Now that Lent is officially over, you might be getting back into Netflix or other streamers if you gave up TV. The good news is we have a fun list of movies to watch on Good Friday and Easter with friends, family, or just by yourself!

We’ve broken down the best movies on Netflix to watch this Easter weekend, categorized by age rating.

Good Friday and Easter movies on Netflix (PG-rated)

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway

Unfortunately, Netflix does not have the first Peter Rabbit movie in its library, but if you’ve seen the first one from 2018 and want more, definitely check out the 2021 sequel, The Runaway. Similarly to Hop, it’s a live-action movie with CGI-animated animals who are super cute. The movie follows Peter (James Corden) as he ditches his family for a new life he thinks will be more exciting. Of course, it doesn’t all work out that way.

A Week Away

A Week Away doesn’t take place during Easter weekend, but it’s a Christian flick with catchy tunes worth checking out. The 2021 Netflix original movie follows the character Will (Kevin Quinn), a teenager who after getting into trouble gets tricked into attending a church summer camp. There, he meets Avery (Bailee Madison), who he eventually falls for. It’s a musical, so get your singing voice ready because you’ll be downloading the tracks after you watch.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Okay, Minions: The Rise of Gru isn’t an Easter or a religious movie, but it’s a fantastic addition to the Netflix lineup that’s fit for the whole family. The 2022 animated comedy is a continuation of the popular Minions story, following the upbringing of Gru, voiced by the hilarious Steve Carell. Gru has dreams of becoming a supervillain and finally has the chance to make it happen in the movie, not without some mishaps along the way.

The minions are so adorable and funny, and the film will make audiences laugh from all ages. If you’re looking for a lighthearted, fun flick to throw on this weekend with your family, this is it.

Fatima

This 2020 faith-based film tells the story of what happens when children connect with higher spirits and aren’t believed. Taking place in 1917 Fatima, Portugal, a group of young cousins Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco, and Jacinta Marto believe they see the visions of the Virgin Mary, but when they tell others what they’ve seen, not everyone is receptive.

There are, however, believers who follow the children to what is now known as the “Miracle of the Sun.”

Little Boy

Another period piece on this list is Little Boy, a 2015 movie that takes place during WWII. Several well-known actors make up the cast, including Emily Watson, David Henrie, Michael Rapaport, Kevin James, Ali Landry, and others. Little Boy follows an eight-year-old child whose father is sent to go fight in the war, and he discovers he might have the power to bring him home. A priest named Father Oliver helps him throughout the way.

Father Stu

Mark Wahlberg stars in the 2022 biographical movie Father Stu, which follows the story of Stuart Long. The real-life figure began his career as a boxer but turned to Catholicism in the early 1990s after miraculously surviving a motorcycle accident that almost killed him. He eventually became a priest, and the movie chronicles his journey into religion while also suffering from a rare muscle disorder called inclusion body myositis.

Other notable cast members in Father Stu include Jacki Weaver, Cody Fern, Malcolm McDowell, and Mel Gibson.

If you’re looking for a faith-based movie to watch this Good Friday and don’t have young kids around, Father Stu might be just what you’re looking for.
