Are Gilmore Girls stars Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy still friends?
By Reed Gaudens
It’s been almost 25 years since the world fell in love with Gilmore Girls, its characters, and the wonderful actors who brought them to life, most especially Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy.
Chances are, if you have a best friend you have been close with for many seasons of life, you think of yourselves as Lorelai and Sookie. For all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy played the inseparable besties and business partners Lorelai Gilmore and Sookie St. James.
The pair weathered the highs and lows of friendship, inn-keeping, motherhood, and everything in between with each other by their side, even when it wasn’t easy. Never forget the trying times in the early days of the Dragonfly Inn! That was definitely Lorelai and Sookie’s biggest fight.
But do Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy share Lorelai and Sookie’s tight friendship in real life? Here’s what fans need to know about their bond outside of the Dragonfly.
Are Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy still friends?
Even though Lauren Graham and Melissa McCarthy played best friends in Gilmore Girls, their on-screen relationship doesn’t seem to be as tight. However, there’s zero bad blood between them in spite of what some people might think. Graham and McCarthy are still friends and super supportive as each other. They made over 100 episodes of television together after all!
Back in February 2020, McCarthy posted a photo on Instagram of her and Graham. The pair reunited, seemingly backstage at The Ellen DeGeneres Show, for a selfie that had the world musing on Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life season 2 — or at least some sort of project together or new iteration of the beloved series.
In October 2022, McCarthy took to Instagram again to celebrate the 22-year anniversary of Gilmore Girls with a series of snaps, one including Lorelai and Sookie embracing. McCarthy praised Graham’s fast-talking performance in one of the posts, calling her on and off-screen friend “amazing.” She’s telling zero lies; Graham was amazing as Lorelai!
Prior to their Instagram reunion and McCarthy’s online Gilmore Girls lovefest, the pair reunited on the set of A Year in the Life in 2016. The Academy Award nominee wasn’t previously attached to reprise her role as Sookie due to both a misunderstanding and scheduling conflicts, but the universe made it work in the end with McCarthy dropping by to make a cameo with Graham and Yanic Truesdale.
Both of the stars spoke about the “sentimental” experience of being back in the Gilmore world and being with each other after all those years. It’s like we all say about old friends: You pick up right where you left off. Graham said about reuniting with McCarthy for the revival, “That was near the end of filming and I thought I [already] cried every tear that I had. And to be there with her and click back into our genuine friendship and also our Stars Hollow friendship was… really mind-blowing.”
