Scott Pilgrim Takes Off release date, cast, and everything we know so far

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World fans, we have some exciting news for you! The 2010 romantic comedy film is getting the anime treatment, and the OG cast is coming along for the ride. That is so rare to happen; we can’t believe it! The anime series, titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, is officially coming to Netflix this fall.

Though it didn’t do well at the box office, the movie eventually gained a cult following, largely thanks to its excellent cast and endearing source material: a series of graphic novels by comic book artist Bryan Lee O’Malley. The production starred Michael Cera as Scott, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, and so many more stars. And now they’re returning to lend their voices to the Netflix animation series!

Co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers Bryan Lee O’Malley and Ben David Grabinski take charge behind the scenes. As mentioned, O’Malley is the creator of the graphic novels the adaptation is based on. The film’s director and co-writer, Edgar Wright, is also attached to the anime as executive producer. This time around, Abel Gongora will take on directing duties.

On August 16, Netflix announced that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will officially be released on Friday, November 17, 2023. This fall just got way more exciting!

Details are still scarce, so the project doesn’t have an official description yet. However, we know that the story will serve as a sort of sequel or continuation of the events in the movie.

Even though Netflix released an official teaser (which you can watch below), it doesn’t provide many plot details and instead shows off the anime’s stylish artwork and teases scenes straight from the graphic novel and movie.

In an interview with TUDUM, Edgar Wright said that fans have been asking for a sequel. And while he knew a live-action film would be tough to pull off, an anime would be more plausible. And now here we are! O’Malley also shared his thoughts and called the series “hilarious, emotional,” and “visually stunning.” Plus, there are some action scenes and “a few surprises” to look forward to!

What is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World about?

If you’ve never seen the movie, it’s centered around 22-year-old Scott Pilgrim (Cera), a bassist in an unsuccessful indie garage band, Sex Bob-Omb. He meets Amazon delivery girl Ramona Flowers (Winstead) and falls for her right away.

When the musical group gets a chance to prove themselves at a battle of the bands run by record executive Gideon Graves (Schwartzman), Ramona’s ex-boyfriend Matthew Patel (Bhabha) shows up ready to fight. Scott takes him on but learns that if he wants to date Ramona, he must first defeat her six evil exes.
