Is Prison Break season 6 happening at Netflix?
If you’re a diehard fan of the crime drama series Prison Break, chances are that earlier this year you heard a rumor about the show returning for a sixth season. And the streaming service to pick it up for an additional installment had been rumored to be Netflix. But is this true? Will there be a Prison Break season 6 at Netflix? We shared what we know about the show’s future below.
Prison Break was a very popular television series when it premiered on Fox in 2005. It aired on the TV network for four seasons from 2005 to 2009, with the film Prison Break: The Final Break airing in May 2009. Then in January 2016, a fifth season was announced by Fox. After the fifth season ended in May 2017, fans had hoped the crime drama would return for a sixth season. It took some time, but in January 2018, Fox announced that season 6 was in development.
But unfortunately, the TV network decided to cancel its plans for a sixth season in August 2019. One of the show’s leading stars Wentworth Miller even confirmed the bad news in late 2020 when he revealed he didn’t have plans to return to the series. So, with the recent talk about season 6 and reports of a new series in development, could we see brothers Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) back on our screens in the future?
Season 6 rumors explained
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the rumor from earlier in 2023 about season 6 happening at Netflix was not true. In fact, it’s not happening at all, or at least not anytime soon. This rumor is just that: a rumor. The rumor started when an unofficial Netflix account on Facebook called “Netflix News” posted a picture of Michael and Lincoln’s faces put together with text above saying “Prison Break return.” It doesn’t help that the caption to the post says, “Prison Break. Season 6. SOON.”
Fans in the comments were quick to express their excitement about a sixth season, with one fan saying, “Can’t wait! One of the best shows ever along with Scandal!” However, this is false news. Netflix nor the creative team behind Prison Break have confirmed a sixth season.
A Reddit user even claims that the picture of Michael and Lincoln was made by the show’s production team in 2018 when a sixth season was announced by Fox. So, it looks like whoever runs the Netflix News Facebook account posted an old image.
A new series is in development at Hulu
However, if you’re hoping to return to the world of the series, news broke on Nov. 2, 2023 that a new series set within the world of the original series has been put into development at Hulu, where the original series currently streams. While the original series was created by Paul Scheuring, Deadline reports that the new series will come from Mayans M.C. co-creator and showrunner Elgin James.
According to the outlet, the series looks to be a “new chapter” that will not include Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell reprising their roles. As previously mentioned, Miller stated in 2020 that he didn’t intended to reprise his role in the fan-favorite series and was looking to no longer play heterosexual characters. At this time, plot details for the new series as well as castings have not been announced, but as a Hulu original series, it’s unlikely to ever stream on Netflix.
The original Prison Break was a fan-favorite in its early days, though some fans believe that the series ultimately outlived its initial premise, which involved Michael going to prison to break out his brother Lincoln. The series then saw them going in and out of prison. Since the season 5 finale mostly wrapped up that storyline, it makes sense for a new series to introduce new characters and a new story, though set within the same world — just like the new Suits series.
Could season 6 end up happening in the future? I mean, there’s always a possibility these days. But for now, fans have a potential new series to look forward to on Hulu that will surely have the essence of the show they knew and loved.
