Shadow and Bone season 2: Who is Gary Fryklind? (Dedication explained)
Shadow and Bone fans, how are you doing? The time has finally come for the show to be back, and all-new episodes are available for our viewing pleasure! Where are my fellow binge-watchers? The sophomore season has a total of eight episodes, and the sixth one certainly threw a lot of curveballs our way! In the end, you may have noticed a dedication message in honor of Gary Fryklind. Who is he?
Spoilers for Shadow and Bone season 2, episode 6 below
If you’re here and looking up who the dedication at the end credits is for, that means you’ve finished this chapter of the story. But last warning for spoilers! Episode 6, “Ni Weh Sesh (I Have No Heart),” saw Kirigan go fully dark and lose his patience, the Crows in some trouble from gas in the air (but Wylan came to the rescue in the form of butterflies – yeah), and Baghra revealed two HUGE plot twists when it comes to Mal.
Alina’s beloved childhood friend turned beau actually descends from the Morozova family, which means he’s actually the third amplifier, aka the Firebird. And that means Alina is in a huge predicament because the way to obtain an amplifier’s powers as we’ve seen – is to kill it. Talk about a heartbreaking decision!
The episode ends with Kirigan learning this information before it cuts to black. Right before the credits start to roll, the screen reads, “dedicated to the memory of Gary Fryklind.” For hardcore fans of the fantasy, you may have noticed Fryklind shares the same last name as an important crew member on the show. Who is he, and who is he related to?
Shadow and Bone season 2: Who is Gary Fryklind? (Dedication explained)
If you look carefully at the credits, you’d see that the co-showrunner of Shadow and Bone season 2 is Daegan Fryklind. She also serves as a writer and executive producer on the show. And the co-showrunner is the one who wrote this very episode.
So who is Gary Fryklind to her? That would be Daegan’s father. The former art teacher passed away suddenly at the age of 80 in April 2021. It seems like she dedicated the episode to her dad due to his passing.
On Instagram, the writer shared a photo and a sweet message about her father. The post said, “even if he didn’t often understand exactly what it is that I do for a living, or what any of it means, he watched it all and asked all the right questions.” The Shadow and Bone EP ended it with, “Love you, Pop.”
Shadow and Bone season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
