Shadow and Bone season 2 finally arrived after a nearly two-year wait in March 2023, and Grishaverse fans won’t be able to get enough of the latest twists and turns the story takes. So much so that by the end of the season, they will already be wondering about Shadow and Bone season 3.

Based on the Grishaverse novels by author and series executive producer Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone centers on Alina (Jessie Mei Li), an orphaned mapmaker who discovers she’s held the amazing power of the Sun Summoner. She’s the key to saving Ravka from The Darkling (Ben Barnes) and his dangerous Shadow Fold.

After watching the events of season 2 unfold, some fans might be wondering if Shadow and Bone season 3 will be happening or if the second season was the final season. Has Shadow and Bone been renewed or canceled? Here’s what we know about the renewal status so far!

Will there be a Shadow and Bone season 3?

As of the release of season 2 in March 2023, Netflix hasn’t revealed the fate of Shadow and Bone season 3 with a renewal or cancellation. Typically, Netflix announces renewals about a month or longer after the release of a season after tracking the first-month viewership. Other renewals, such as Outer Banks season 4, were announced ahead of the latest season’s release.

Considering its loyal fanbase, Shadow and Bone will surely make an unavoidable case for renewal. Beyond the ratings of season 2, Netflix might also be looking at the potential growing costs of the series. Because of its use of special effects, the series appears to be one of the most expensive shows on the streamer’s roster, and we know streamers have been cutting costs.

But there’s certainly no shortage of material for a third season. There were a number of storylines from the final two Shadow and Bone books and the Six of Crows books left unexplored, and Bardugo’s King of Scars/Rule of Wolves duology could also find its way into the series. Moreover, the open-ended finale of Shadow and Bone season 2 provided enough closure to be a satisfying conclusion to the series, while also leaving the door open to tell future stories.

WARNING: Spoilers from Shadow and Bone season 2 beyond this point!

In the closing sequences of Shadow and Bone season 2, Nikolai has been revealed to be infected by The Darkling’s shadow monsters, while Alina also appears to have turned into a Shadow Summoner. The transformation could be the cost of using merzost to bring Mal back from the dead and could also hint her connection to The Darkling hasn’t been fully severed.

Meanwhile, the Crows are on the hunt to stop the spread of a drug that amplifies Grisha power to over 1,000 times, but Fjerda has already weaponized the drug during Nikolai and Alina’s coronation. Also, Mal has taken on the role of Sturmhond aboard the Hummingbird, where he helps lead the search for Inej’s family.
