Shadow and Bone season 2 episode 7 recap: “Meet You in the Meadow”

“Meet You in the Meadow” is really where things really pop off in Shadow and Bone season 2. We get tons of big action sequences, and aside from its ending, is a really fun episode.

At the beginning of the episode, the Darkling and his Grisha are making big moves. Vladim uses Baghra’s remaining bone amplifiers to amplify the Grisha. They’re able to do some pretty incredible things. The Darkling, knowing Mal is his cousin, asks Mal to leave the fight and disappear, but Mal refuses.

Mal, Alina, Nikolai, and David make a plan to premake an amplifier of Mal by cutting his finger off, and attaching it to Alina. Then, when he dies via Heartrender for a few minutes, Alina can use the amplification, align the three amplifiers, and destroy the Fold and Darkling. The Heartrender would then restore Mal’s heartbeat. He lives and the Fold gets destroyed.

They enact the plan, but the Darkling has set a trap. They’re not at Keramzin as expected, and they shoot Nikolai’s airship out of the sky. It crash lands, and the race is on back to the fort.

The Darkling’s Shadow Monsters also interrupt Mal getting his finger cut off, so that plan is officially out. The fight continues, while the Darkling drags the Fold over the fort, which brings more Shadow Monsters and volcra into the fight, as well.

Things are looking bleak for our heroes. The Darkling’s Shadow Monsters and volcra are making things hard on Alina’s group, while the survivors from the airship crash are pinned back by the Darkling’s Grisha with amplified powers. Things are going bad until Tolya and the Crows arrive with Neshyenyer, the sword of light, to defeat the shadow. Jesper, Wylan, and the Crows also save Nikolai, but there are many casualties, including the Commander of the First Army, Dominik.

It all leads into the Fold where Alina and Mal join forces, using all three amplifiers, to destroy the Fold. It’s working, too, until the Darkling steps into the battle. He tries to use the Cut on Alina and Mal, but Alina blocks it with a Cut of her own. It rebounds, hitting Mal and the Darkling.

Mal is dying, and the Shadow Monsters are closing in. The episode ends with Nina getting taken into the Shadow by one of the monsters.

Other important things that happened:

  • David seemingly sacrifices himself to save Genya after discussing gemstones with her. Heartbreaking if it ends this way for them.
