Shadow and Bone season 2 episode 5 recap: “Yuyeh Sesh (Despise Your Heart)”

If Shadow and Bone season 2 episode 4 is where things really get good, the fifth episode ups the ante even more.

Underground, Nikolai, Alina, and the gang are alive, and they’ve bested the Darkling again. Genya, Baghra, and Mal, mysteriously, find Alina and Nikolai. This is the first time anyone has seen Genya with the scars after the Darkling hurt her. She doesn’t want to be around David, but eventually, they reconcile.

Elsewhere, the Crows plus Zoya and Tolya are going looking for the light sword in Bhez Ju in Shu Han. They meet with Ohval, who claims to not know that the sword in Ahmrat Jen is a fake, and refuses to help. The Crows know she is lying, but they can’t prove it. They follow her, which eventually ends with them being trapped in a room and poisoned.

We also learn a lot more about Kaz’s backstory and why he wears gloves. His brother died of firepox after he was tricked by Pekka Rollins after arriving in Ketterdam. Rollins is thriving in prison, and he kills Matthias’ best friend in Hellgate. He is taking over.

Most importantly, Alina connects with the Darkling again. This time, she realizes that he has a chance to kill him, and she almost does. He lowers his guard, but Alina is interrupted by Mal, and the connection is severed. Alina is mad at Mal, and there’s an obvious rift between them. It’s no Shadow Fold, but they are not as united as they once were.

Eventually, Baghra gets sick of this mess her son has created, and she has deemed Alina and Mal worthy of her help. She agrees to help them find the Firebird, but they must go to Morozova’s workshop for more answers.

The Darkling also says, “The whole world will hear it when I make her scream.” Dang, what a menace.
