Shadow and Bone season 2 episode 3 recap: “Like Calls to Like”

After using the Sea Whip amplifier, Sturmhond reveals his boat is actually a plane and takes to the skies. He flies Alina and Mal back to Ravka through the Fold, and it’s kind of a mess. Alina is unable to vanquish the Fold, and the ship crashes after Alina collapses and the volcra attack.

When they land, Sturmhond shares that he’s actually Nikolai Lantsov and he takes Alina to the King. There, she reunites with Zoya, and Alina learns the Darkling is still alive. They know that her two amplifiers are not enough. They need the third: the Firebird.

They also need more help, which means that Nikolai and Alina should consider getting engaged to unite the country against the Darkling and his Grisha army, as well as other threats like Fjerda, too.

David returns, and the Darkling immediately starts using him to help with his problems with the nichevo’ya. The Darkling gives him Morozova’s journal to figure out what’s wrong with him. He also asks David to investigate his connection with Alina. A fragment of the amplifier still remains.

Genya and David make a pact to escape to help Nikolai defeat the Darkling. David escapes, but Genya stays behind after the Darkling catches her in the betrayal. She is attacked and cut up by the Shadow Monsters. David has also taken Morozova’s journal, which should help Alina and Mal find the Firebird.

At the end of the episode, we see the Darkling visit Alina in her sleep. Clearly, there is still some kind of connection between them.

We also get a lot of Crows in this episode. Nina tries to visit Matthias in Hellgate, but she’s captured by Pekka Rollins men during Matthias’ fight. Rollins claims that he will kill Matthias unless she brings him Kaz. Pekka has had enough of Kaz’s games.

Jesper and Wylan also find out that Pekka has a son hidden in the country. He doesn’t want enemies to know about it. And, more about Kaz’s feud with Pekka is revealed. He and his brother were duped by Pekka after their parents died, and it looks like they were swindled.
