How to watch The Chronicles of Riddick movies in order (Are all of the Riddick movies on Netflix?)

Vin Diesel is best known for starring in the Fast and Furious movies, but did you know he also leads a sci-fi action franchise called The Chronicles of Riddick? For those unfamiliar, The Chronicles of Riddick movies follow an antihero named Richard B. Riddick who escapes from prison after a passenger ship crashes on a remote planet.

Across three films, Riddick faces off against deadly aliens and ruthless bounty hunters as he fights to stay alive and help to save humanity. He stands out because of his genetically-enhanced eyes, which are sensitive to light, and often see him sticking to the darkness.

Whether you’re new to the films or already a fan, Netflix has added them to the platform! Here’s how you can watch them all in order.

Are all of the Riddick movies on Netflix?

Netflix added the three main Riddick movies to the platform on March 16, including Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick, and Riddick. But you will have to look elsewhere to watch the short film and the television special. Keep reading to find out the proper order of the Riddick movies and where you can watch anything not available on Netflix.

How to watch The Chronicles of Riddick movies in order

All three of The Chronicles of Riddick movies are now on Netflix, but if you’re unfamiliar with the Riddick series, you might need help figuring out the correct order. Here’s how to watch the films chronologically by release date.

Pitch Black (2000)

Pitch Black is the first movie in the series, launching the Riddick franchise and introducing Vin Diesel’s antihero, Richard B. Riddick, to the world. Set in a distant future, a spaceship carrying a combination of passengers and prisoners through cryostasis crash lands on a remote planet overrun with dangerous creatures ready to tear the survivors apart.

Riddick, one of the prisoners onboard, escapes during the crash, and the passengers soon find themselves depending on him for rescue. The catch is that Riddick has genetically modified eyes sensitive to light, so they must all travel in the dark.

The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

The second film in the franchise sees the return of Riddick, now on the run with bounty hunters on his tail. Riddick is heralded as the one man who might be able to confront a group of warriors known as the Necromongers, who intend to destroy human life as we know it. Aereon (Judi Dench) acts as an advisor of sorts to Riddick, urging him to confront the Necromongers and save humanity.

Riddick (2013)

Simply titled Riddick, this 2013 movie is the third full-length feature film in the Riddick series. Once again, Diesel returns to play the galactic fugitive. Similar to Pitch Black, Riddick begins with the titular character stranded on a desolate planet and under attack from ferocious alien predators.

Other media from The Chronicles of Riddick franchise

Besides the three main movies, The Chronicles of Riddick franchise includes video games, a short film, a television special, and several novels. There is also a fourth movie in development titled Riddick 4: Furya.

The short film, titled The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, is an animated title taking place after the events of Pitch Black. It’s not currently streaming, but you can purchase it from digital retailers like Amazon and YouTube.

The 2000 television special Into Pitch Black isn’t available anywhere online right now, but the events in it take place before and after Pitch Black the movie. However, the events of the TV special are not considered canon.
