You season 4 part 2 is finally available to stream on Netflix, and the last episodes of the season follow Joe as he tries to figure out how to take down Rhys once and for all. But does Joe actually complete his goal? Does Rhys die by the hands of Joe? We answered these questions below.

Warning: Spoilers from You season 4 part 2 ahead!

First, we must start by discussing the biggest plot twist of the season. In episode 8, we find out Rhys isn’t the Eat The Rich killer. Instead, Joe was the person killing off the members of the friend group. This was shocking because, in part 1, Joe makes it his mission to change and rid himself of his murderous ways. But in episode 8, we realize just how mentally unstable Joe really is.

Joe did want to start a new life in London, forget about his past, and stop killing people. But unknowingly, he would fall into a trance-like state and revert to his old ways. Then, he imagined the person he most admired, Rhys Montrose, was committing all the murders when it was actually him.

Joe doesn’t find out he’s the killer until Rhys tells him, but something happens to Rhys before he can break the news. What is it?

Does Rhys die in You season 4 part 2?

Yes, Rhys dies in part 2. Joe kills him by strangling him to death in episode 7. After Tom Lockwood gives Joe the address to Rhys’s whereabouts, Joe finds Rhys at his ex-wife’s house. He holds Rhys hostage and questions him about where Marienne is. Rhys tells Joe that he doesn’t know who Marienne is or where she could be, but Joe doesn’t believe him. Joe continues to torture Rhys until he becomes enraged and starts strangling him. He doesn’t realize what he’s doing until it’s too late, and Rhys takes his last breath.

Then, Joe starts to hallucinate that Rhys is alive. In episode 8, an imagined Rhys tells Joe he’s the killer. Imagined Rhys also explains to Joe that he never met him until he killed him. Somehow Joe imagined that he had met and befriended Rhys, but this didn’t actually happen. Anytime Joe thought he was talking to Rhys, he was actually having a conversation with himself.

So there you have it, folks! Joe kills Rhys by strangulation. Did Rhys deserve to die? No, but Joe was too far gone to realize what he was doing.

The entire fourth season of You is streaming on Netflix.
