After 19 seasons as the title character in Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo has taken a step back from her leading role of Meredith Grey. She’s been with the series since its premiere in 2005 and seen the landmark medical drama through so many casting changes.

Sandra Oh left Grey’s Anatomy almost 10 years ago, way back in 2014 after completing 10 seasons as the talented Cristina Yang. Meredith and Cristina were each other’s “person,” the television best friends we have all looked up to for years.

But has the on-screen friendship of Meredith and Cristina translated to a real-life friendship between actresses Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh? For all of those diehard Grey’s fans wondering if they’re still pals in 2023, here’s what you need to know.

While Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh may not be as close as they once were as coworkers on Grey’s Anatomy, they are still friends and supportive of each other’s careers. Oh parted the series after 10 seasons on good terms with Pompeo, just like Meredith and Cristina.

Back in 2019, Pompeo shared to TV Line that she would have loved for Oh to make a guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy as Cristina, but she found her friend’s success outside of the medical drama more fulfilling to watch.

When Oh departed her post as Cristina Yang in the Grey’s Anatomy season 10 finale in May 2014, she went on to star in the spy thriller series Killing Eve for four seasons. The role won Oh a Golden Globe award and landed her four Emmy Award nominations.

Oh has continued to find success on the small screen in titles like The Chair, Invincible, and The Sandman, with an upcoming Hulu comedy film with Awkwafina and Will Ferrell in the works. It remains to be seen whether she would return to Grey’s in the future, though she reunited with creator Shonda Rhimes and star Chandra Wilson in 2022.
