Ashley Madekwe makes her return to the acting world with her brand new film The Strays, streaming now on Netflix. If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, you must immediately add this movie to your watchlist. Also, if you enjoy movies like Get Out and Us, this film will be right up your alley as well.

The Strays is a British Netflix original movie by actor/writer/director Nat Martello-White. He made his feature film debut with this movie and wrote the screenplay.

It tells the story of a privileged Black woman whose seemingly perfect life begins to fall apart when two strangers appear in her quiet, affluent town.

Besides Madekwe, the cast is made up of more talented actors such as Bukky Bakray, Jorden Myrie, Justin Salinger, Samuel Small, Maria Almeida, Tom Andrews, and Lucy Liemann.

What is The Strays about on Netflix?

We shared the thriller flick’s plot above, but we also wanted to provide a more detailed synopsis.

Initially, the story is set in the year of 2003. The protagonist is a light-skinned black woman named Cheryl, who constantly faces hardship and is fed up with living a miserable life due to institutionalized racism and marginalization. So, she decides to run away from her problems to seek a better life. Then we cut to 18 years later, and Cheryl now goes by Neve and lives in a predominately white neighborhood called Castle Combe with a husband and two kids.

Cheryl/Neve has worked hard to hide her background and strives to live a picture-perfect life. She now works as the deputy headmistress of her children’s private school and is well-respected in the community. But all of her hard work to live as affluently as possible is thrown out the window with the arrival of a black man and woman who she believes doesn’t belong. As Cheryl/Neve deals with the two strangers, her carefully curated upper-middle-class life begins to unravel and her past haunts her.

The Strays parents guide and age rating

The thriller is rated TV-MA, meaning it’s intended to be watched by mature, adult audiences only. It was given this maturity rating for strong language, smoking, and violence. Given what the movie is about, this maturity rating seems appropriate. Overall, we wouldn’t recommend watching this film with young kids around. It may not be suitable for kids under 17.
