Outer Banks season 3 episode 4 recap: The Diary
After his brief moment of panic, John B discovers that his dad had gone to get the Twinkie in order to get his hands on the copy of Denmark’s diary located within it. Unfortunately, the diary was ruined by its exposure to water so they’ll need to seek out Mr. Sunn (John B’s former history teacher) who is in possession of the original diary.
It’s during this moment we also see some early tensions building between Big John and Sarah, as he makes it clear he does not trust her simply due to her last name and connection to Ward. Because of this, the Johns embark on the journey to Mr. Sunn’s house alone to get the diary.
Upon arriving at Mr. Sunn’s place, a pair of smugglers attack Big John and John B, and are able to get away with the diary. Big John and John B give chase, following the pair out into the waters where they confront the smugglers in hopes of getting the diary back. When it becomes clear they’re not going to hand over the diary, Big John kills them both and takes the diary before tossing their bodies into the sea. After, Big John begins to read through the diary and discovers a new hint at the location of the other half of the artifact he took from the antique shop — hinting at where the pair’s adventure will go next.
Elsewhere in the episode, the rest of the Pogues are reunited with their loved ones and attempt to settle back into their old lives. Kiara has an emotional reunion with her parents, JJ discovers the bank has foreclosed on his home, and Pope introduces Cleo to his parents and they offer to allow her to stay with them.
As for Sarah, she returns home to gather some clothing and personal items which is when she overhears Rafe taking a call from Ward. Listening in on the call, Sarah discovers the plan to move it that night as Ward and Rose look to give it to a museum to help atone for their past actions.
Sarah quickly relays this news to the Pogues and they come up with a plan to steal the cross back from the Camerons, not knowing that Ward has met with Barry to develop a plan of his own for stealing the cross from under Ward’s nose.
