You season 4 part 1 is finally streaming on Netflix, and tons of people are watching the new installment. This season, Joe hopes to start fresh with a clean slate and his past erased, but obviously, that’s not going to happen. Instead, Joe finds himself in the company of a circle of wealthy friends who quickly start becoming victims of a mysterious killer’s sick game. And this mysterious killer is out to get Joe by not only trying to pin the murders on him but digging up and revealing his dark past.

Spoilers ahead from You season 4 part 1.

Obviously, the mysterious killer doesn’t want to be discovered, so they contact Joe through a phone application called “Evanesce.” This app allows the killer to say pretty much whatever they want to say to Joe without them getting in trouble. How? Well, according to Joe, Evanesce is a high-security phone application that erases messages after they’ve been read. So, once the mysterious killer sends a message to Joe and Joe reads it, it disappears immediately. This way, Joe has no evidence to take to the authorities.

The mysterious killer first starts contacting Joe through the phone application at the end of episode 1. Joe receives several text messages through Evanesce, which surprises him because he didn’t have the app on his phone at first. The text messages Joe receives basically let him know that someone is watching him and is trying to frame him. Immediately, Joe believes the mysterious killer/anonymous texter is one of the people from the privileged friend group, so he sets out to figure out who it is.

But is Evanesce a real phone application? Can you download it to your phone from an app store? Find out below.

Is Evanesce from You season 4 a real app?

Nope. Evanesce is not a real phone application, so you will not be able to download it to your phone. It was created by the writers of the show. However, it might remind you of an actual app that’s very popular nowadays. The app is called Snapchat, and it’s similar to Evanesce in that photos, videos, and messages sent through the app disappear seconds after they’re viewed. So, maybe the You writers were basing Evanesce on Snapchat when they were coming up with it.

However, a big difference between Evanesce and Snapchat is that Evansesce is mainly used by the elite while Snapchat is used by any and everyone.
