New Amsterdam parents guide: Is the medical drama appropriate for kids?

Inspired by the real Bellevue Hospital in New York, New Amsterdam is a popular NBC medical drama about the oldest public hospital around. The series begins with Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) becoming the new medical director and vowing to turn this understaffed and underappreciated facility around into the groundbreaking, state-of-the-art hospital it’s capable of becoming.

Since Netflix added the show to its streaming catalog, it has immediately become a big hit for the streamer, skyrocketing to the top of Netflix’s weekly Top 10 chart. Even though the show officially finished wrapped its five-season run in January 2023, it’s clearly finding new life on Netflix.

If you’ve watched other medical dramas and broadcast television shows with your family, you might be curious whether or not New Amsterdam is an appropriate series to add to your watchlist. Here’s what you need to know.

New Amsterdam age rating and parents guide

Like most medical dramas, New Amsterdam is rated TV-14. The primary reason for the TV-14 rating is due to mature themes and some graphic medical content. While less explicit than, say, Nip/Tuck, New Amsterdam occasionally shows surgery and other medical procedures that might be too graphic for young viewers.

Beyond the actual surgery, the show also deals with heavy topics like death, hospice care, and other adult themes. You will see patients grieving for each other and the result of medical emergencies like car accidents, violent altercations, and more.

Regarding sex and sexuality, most of the romantic content in New Amsterdam is tame. There is some kissing and talk of intimacy, but usually, the show fades to black and cuts to the morning after or pillow talk.

If your kids watch other medical dramas on television like Grey’s Anatomy or The Resident, they will probably be okay to watch New Amsterdam.
