For the first time, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher star together in a romantic comedy. The A-listers have been rom-com veterans for much of their careers, but now they’ve joined forces for Netflix’s Your Place or Mine, premiering Feb. 10.

In the movie, Witherspoon plays Debbie, a single mother seemingly in a bit of a romance rut, while Kutcher plays Peter, a single businessman in a different kind of rut. Debbie and Peter, who have been best friends for 20 years, swap lives in Los Angeles and New York for one week, and the trade could be exactly what they both needed.

As the famous and talented pair have started promoting the film and walked various red carpets in honor of their new movie, fans have noticed that Witherspoon and Kutcher have somewhat of an awkward energy. Their red carpet chemistry has been the talk of the internet.

Even though some of the Your Place or Mine red carpet photos tell a different story, don’t let those distant red carpet photos fool you: Reese and Ashton are friends in real life!

While they might not be as tight as Debbie and Peter in the movie, the actors are friends. During a joint interview with Extra for the film, Witherspoon noted that she texted Kutcher before he ran the New York marathon. Filming their romantic comedy truly bonded them as costars and friends.

As for those awkward red carpet photos, Witherspoon and Kutcher have both joked about how Kutcher’s wife Mila Kunis got on their cases. Kutcher spoke on the Chicks in the Office podcast about his wife messaging him and Witherspoon saying, “You gotta act like you like each other!”

Kutcher playfully explained that he was in a lose-lose situation: “If I put my arm around her and was, like, all friendly with her, I’d be having an affair with her. The rumor would be that I’m having an affair with her. If I stand next to her, I put my hands in my pockets, so there’s no chance that could be the rumor, the rumor is we don’t like each other.”

While he went on to say that he and his costar are really good friends, Witherspoon also joked about Kunis’s message with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on the Today show. She shared that she had been close friends with Kunis prior to working with Kutcher, and that in order to become close before filming, she and Kutcher would FaceTime and share videos back and forth.

Considering the pair only physically shares three scenes together in the movie, they have done a pretty good job as romantic comedy stars to bring their chemistry as friends to life. Of course, viewers will be the judge of that once they watch the highly anticipated com-com.
