The Snow Girl episode 2 recap: David Luque’s horrible secret

The Snow Girl episode 2 picks up right where the first episode left off, with the viewing of the videotape showing Amaya in 2016. But the video causes more questions than answers. Who still uses VHS tapes in 2016? How can they be sure that’s Amaya in the tape? Is this meant to be proof of life? Will the kidnappers ask for something in exchange now? But the tape does succeed in giving Ana and Álvaro the first spot of hope they’ve had in years.

We return to 2010 and the days following Amaya’s disappearance. The cops have now focused their investigation on David Luque after learning he has a rap sheet. But it’s more complicated than it initially appears.

At the Diario Sur, Miren gets a second chance after Eduardo vouches for her. Their editor agrees to let them continue working on the Amaya story together. He assigns them a profile on David Luque.

As The Snow Girl episode 2 plays out, we get more insight into Miren’s troubled past. Her mother is worried about her and Miren is still attending group therapy sessions to deal with her assault. A nasty moment occurs when she and Eduardo meet with a source who agrees to give them David’s old case file in exchange for cash. During their meeting, the man harasses Miren with several provocative statements, leading to a physical outburst.

But the case file does prove to be valuable. It shows that David’s assault charge was from a relationship he had with a 15-year-old when he was 18. The girl in question was Rosa, his current wife. The more they dig into his past, the more Miren starts doubting his guilt. Would Rosa really have been married to her rapist for 30 years?

Even though David claims Amaya was like a daughter to him, and he would never have harmed her, the truth is that he was at the parade with his family too and he left at one point to buy an umbrella. The timing works. He could have taken Amaya, stowed her away in one of his company’s trucks (he owns a removal company), and then returned to his family until the parade ended. Even though David was his best friend, Álvaro is quick to believe that he could be guilty. The police have to physically restrain him from attacking David at the station.

In between questioning David and checking out other possible leads, the detectives get a tip that something fishy is going down at Juancho’s. When they arrive they see him carrying a big wooden box from the trunk of his car, something thuds on the lid in an attempt to escape. Inside is a giant yellow snake. Juancho has been acting weird because he smuggles exotic pets on the side. He’s into some shady stuff, but he doesn’t appear to be Amaya’s kidnapper.

Miren’s real fear is that the police will waste all this time looking into David, only to let the real culprit walk free. Miren goes to visit Samuel at home when he’s alone. She asks him to tell her everything he can about his father so she can help him prove David’s innocence. Once Samuel knows Miren is on his side, he happily obliges.

Elsewhere, Belén is still concerned they’re missing something regarding David. His records show that he has significant cash flow coming in, enough to purchase a yacht. Owning a removal company isn’t enough to get him that kind of money, so where is it coming from? Her partner mentions that he and Rosa used to rent an apartment and that sparks Belén’s interest.

They get Rosa to take them there to check it out, making a very disturbing discovery in the process. Belén and her partner find a video camera with footage of a young girl who appears to be drugged. Samuel is on-screen with her and David tells his son to undress her. They find boxes of DVDs, all labeled with different girls’ names. It seems like David had coerced his own son into drugging women and making pornography with him. And based on the money David makes, we can infer that he was selling the tapes.

Rosa walks in while the cops are watching the video camera footage and is, understandably, horrified. She calls Samuel in tears, begging him to tell the truth and asking if he and his father did something to Amaya. Samuel takes the call while Miren is there.

He becomes increasingly distraught after the call with his mom as he realizes the cops know everything now. A panicked Samuel runs out the door and jumps over the railing, committing suicide. But before he dies, he tells Miren that he and his dad didn’t do anything to Amaya.

Back in 2016, we find out that Ana and Álvaro are no longer together. Álvaro tells Ana he misses her, but she says the videotape doesn’t change anything. It looks like Álvaro has already moved on with another woman anyway.

Miren returns to her apartment, and we see she has a big corkboard full of details regarding Amaya’s case. Six years later and she still hasn’t given up. The final seconds of The Snow Girl episode 2 show the mysterious bedroom featuring the dollhouse from Amaya’s tape as creepy children’s music plays in the background and a video camera lights up to record.
