There are plenty of 2024 movies coming to Netflix to get excited about and one of them is the long-awaited romantic comedy film Players, starring Gina Rodriguez, Tom Ellis, Damon Wayans Jr., and more. Originally slated for a 2023 release, the film was pushed back but is finally coming to Netflix just in time for Valentine's Day, on Feb. 14.
Rodriguez plays a character with a penchant for hook-ups and one night stands. She and her friends are all about creating the perfect "plays" to wingman (or wingwoman) for one another and it's resulted in a lot of action over the years. But when someone sweeps Mack off of her feet, will she be able to throw the playbook out altogether?
Director Trish Sie, writer Whit Anderson, producers Ryan Christians, Ross Dinerstein, Marc Platt, and Adam Siegel, as well as executive producers Molly Breeskin, Ross Girard, and Sophia Lin, are all attached to the project. Rodriguez also serves as an executive producer.
Here is all we know about the upcoming production!
Netflix viewers are more than likely familiar with Lucifer star Tom Ellis, who also takes on a lead role in the production. We’ve shared the cast list below:
- Gina Rodriguez as Mack
- Damon Wayans Jr. as Adam
- Tom Ellis as Nick
- Joel Courtney as Little
- Liza Koshy as Ashley
- Augustus Prew as Brannagan
What is Players about?
The new movie focuses on Rodriguez's character Mack, a sportswriter who comes up with hook-up "plays" with her friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.). Their one rule is to never let a real romance grow from one of these set-ups, but that all changes when Mack finds herself charmed by Tom Ellis' character Nick.
Here's the official synopsis from Netflix:
"New York sportswriter Mack (Gina Rodriguez) has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with best friend Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.) and their crew. While it has led to countless one-night stands over the years, following their playbook comes with a strict set of ground rules — chief among them: you can’t build a relationship from a play. When Mack unexpectedly falls for her latest target, charming war correspondent Nick (Tom Ellis), she begins to rethink the game entirely. As the lines between work, fun, friendship, and romance begin to blur, Mack must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps."
Players is officially coming to Netflix on February 14.
