3 Netflix shows that should end in 2023

We’re officially onto a new year and already, Netflix is making headlines. Though we’ve only gotten one big TV show release in Ginny and Georgia season 2, there have been multiple cancellations and an exciting renewal that’s kept all eyes on the streaming service. 2022 was an amazing year for Netflix content, and I have a feeling 2023 will be just as big. With shows like You, Outer Banks, Shadow and Bone, and The Witcher all slated to return this year, Netflix will no doubt have another successful year.

But beyond our excitement over the shows returning this year, we’re also wondering about a few that might be nearing their ends. We’re not saying these shows deserve to be canceled (especially not without a proper ending!), but there are a select few that will likely overstay their welcome after their next season debuts.

We hate when shows go on for too long and become stale — though Netflix rarely lets that happen with the rate they cancel things! — and we believe the following three originals should be ending soon. Like this year.

Sex Education

It honestly pains me to write this because Sex Education is one of my favorite Netflix shows of all time, but the upcoming fourth season should probably be its last. I’m sorry! I absolutely adore the main characters Otis and Maeve, and the third season was my favorite from the British comedy. But with casting shakeups and the actors getting older, a fourth-season send-off would be ideal.

In case you missed it, it was reported that several actors would be leaving Sex Education, including Bridgerton breakout star Simone Ashley, along with Patricia Allison and Tanya Reynolds. Of course, the show can go on without them, but the fact that they’ve departed signals that the cast is ready to move on.

Sex Education season 4 will see an exciting cast addition in Dan Levy, which will be so fun. But after that, we think it’s time to say goodbye. At this time, the fourth season is expected to debut sometime in 2023, but we don’t have a release date yet.

Elite

I’ll be real with you all — I stopped watching Elite a long time ago. I’m happy for the fans of the show that it’s still on, but I think the general consensus is that it’s gone on for too long. Though the Spanish-language show was once a major staple for Netflix in its early seasons, the storylines have only become stale by its sixth, which was released in 2022. Many viewers seemed to consider season 6 as just alright, and I was surprised the streamer renewed Elite for season 7.

In Elite season 7, the whole cast is completely new except for one returning actor, Omar Ayuso as Omar Shanaa. Depending on how the seventh season is received, there’s probably a good chance Netflix will finally axe the show. And that wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Netflix has yet to announce the release date for Elite season 7, but based on the previous seasons we can assume it’ll most likely be out sometime this year.

Virgin River

Virgin River fans, don’t come for me! I will admit that the Netflix romance is addicting when the drama is at its height, and it can be pretty fun to watch. It’s not one of my favorite shows, but it can definitely be entertaining. That said, the series is entering its fifth season in 2023, and I don’t know how much story is left. Sure, diehard fans could probably watch Mel and Jack do just about anything, but I think the show is nearing its end. It should be, at least.

The fourth season wasn’t as strong as the previous ones, and the stakes weren’t as high. Plus, it’s getting sillier and sillier by the season. I promise I’m not a hater, but I do see this one overstaying its welcome if it’s renewed for a sixth season. Though given how popular Virgin River is, it wouldn’t be shocking if Netflix decides to renew it.

Virgin River season 5 doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’re expecting it out this year.
