Netflix unveils exciting slate of sports documentaries (check out the full list!)

Netflix is getting into the sporting side of the industry with lots of exciting new documentaries in the works! Many of us fans on the streaming service are more television and movie buffs. But hey, we could learn a few things from these sports docs!

As part of Netflix’s efforts to get more sporty, you can expect to hear behind-the-scenes stories with various athletes, teams, leagues, and federations in a variety of athletics, according to a Netflix press release. Two exciting ones are an untitled docuseries about the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the international rugby tournament, Six Nations.

Sports documentaries coming to Netflix

Formula 1: Drive to Survive has been a popular docuseries for Netflix about the racing competition. Building on that success, these are some of the docs planned at the streamer to join F1, which premieres its fifth season on Feb. 24, 2023, per Netflix:

  • Break Point (Jan. 13, 2023)
    • The documentary follows several tennis players on and off the court for one year as they travel worldwide for four Grand Slams and the ATP and WTA tours. Viewers can expect to see just how high-pressure the lives of these pro tennis players are.
  • Full Swing (Feb. 15, 2023)
    • The eight-episode docuseries takes us into the world of golf and gives us a glimpse at the golfers’ “high-stakes schedule” each week on the PGA TOUR, all four of the major championships, and their lives on and off the course.
  • Formula 1: Drive to Survive season 5 (Feb. 24, 2023)
    • Another season, another race. F1 will once again give viewers a behind-the-scenes look, this time at the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship.
  • Heart of Invictus (summer 2023)
    • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s next Netflix project is Heart of Invictus. The new series will follow veterans who have life-changing injuries or illnesses. They will compete in the Invictus Games, “revealing powerful stories of resilience and hope.”
  • Untitled Tour de France Docuseries (2023)
    • This race is like no other! The country’s Tour de France is a men’s multiple-stage bicycle race that is very special in the European country. The series will show the ups and downs of the eight teams and the cyclists’ three-week tour.
  • Untitled FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (summer 2023)
    • Netflix and FIFA+ have partnered to bring viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the soccer tournament, the 32 teams who took part in the 2022 game, and a “definitive account of one of the greatest sporting spectacles of all time.”
  • Six Nations (working title, 2024) 
    • Rugby is a huge deal in Europe, and what better look at the game than the oldest international rugby tournament, the Six Nations!? Fans will get a closer look at the year’s Guinness Six Nations Championship.
