The emotional story is based on the bestselling book Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy written by Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, which itself is inspired by the tragic Uphaar Cinema fire that took place in 1997. In June 1997, 59 people died in a fire at the Uphaar Cinema in South Delhi during the 3 p.m. screening of the film Border.

Around 100 individuals were injured. Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy were affected by the fire and based their book on the incident. The couple lost their two kids in the fire and have been fighting “powerful forces” to find justice. An investigation into the fire revealed there were several fire code violations.
