Kaleidoscope recap: Violet: 24 Years Before the Heist

The next episode on our list is “Violet,” which takes place 24 years before the heist! We’re going back in time to see what drove Ray and Roger apart and what sent Ray to prison.

“Violet” opens up with Ray and Roger working together on a con, and we soon meet Ray’s wife Lily, and a very young Hannah. They seem to be a perfectly happy family, though Ray struggles with his line of work. Although the cons with Roger bring in a lot of money, is it worth continuing when he has so much to lose? Roger goes by Graham at this point, so we have to guess that perhaps Graham is his real name and he might’ve changed it to Roger.

One night when Roger and a date named Courtney come over to Ray and Lily’s for dinner, Ray confides in Roger and says he wants to stop all the criminal work. Roger seems surprised and disappointed, also revealing to the viewer that the two of them have been at it for 15 years together. Despite Roger’s reaction, Ray is set on his decision.

Ray moves on from the con life and starts his own auto parts business, and his family seems happy. But the bad news is they’re in debt. They can’t make their loan payments in time, though they’re determined to make things work. One day, Roger pays Ray a visit to his store and tells him he wants to get back into the cons. He says he’s in financial trouble and can suspect Ray needs the money, too. Ray doesn’t seem to want to budge, however.

But one fateful afternoon changes everything. After work, Ray goes to pick up Lily and Hannah at the country club where Lily works as an accountant. Unfortunately, a whole scene goes down when security makes rude and extremely racist remarks targeted at Ray and his family. Ray doesn’t let it go, understandably, and yells at security, getting Lily fired in the process. After this, Ray agrees to work with Roger again, but lies to Lily about his plans.

Ray knows the country club is hosting a charity auction featuring very old, very expensive jewelry, and he tells Roger that’s their next target. The two men plan the con pretty quickly, and just like that, we see another heist unfold.

But things don’t go according to plan. Just as Ray and Roger are planning to go to the country club, so is Lily. Unexpectedly, her former boss calls her up while she’s at home with Hannah and says they need her help with invoices. She heads over there and gets to work, putting on headphones to make it more relaxing. Meanwhile, Ray is able to break into the room with the safe full of precious jewels and starts replacing them with fakes as he stashes the real ones in his bag.

Unfortunately, Ray is ultimately caught by security, but Roger comes in, and they’re able to knock the worker out. From there, Roger sets a fire to distract the charity attendees and buy them more time to steal the jewels. This really doesn’t give them much more time, however, as they have to get out fast to avoid the flames. When they get out to the parking lot unscathed, Ray sees Lily’s car parked outside and realizes she’s inside. Remember, she had her headphones in, so there’s a chance she doesn’t notice the fire before it’s too late.

Ray runs back into the club, looking for Lily, but when he finds her, he can’t get to her easily. He looks up and sees Roger, who’s close enough to Lily to grab her, but instead, he flees when he hears the police sirens. This is very clear, and understandably, the catalyst for their falling out. Ray finally gets to Lily, and he holds her while he waits for the fire department to come help.

Kaleidoscope Violet episode ending explained

“Violet” ends with Ray and Hannah sitting at the hospital waiting to hear any news about Lily. Ray knows it won’t be long until he’s caught for what he did that night, and he’s come up with a plan to keep Hannah safe. As a detective walks in, so does Ava, and Ray explains to Hannah that she must go walk over to Ava and leave with her. Hannah asks about her mom, and we still don’t know if Lily will survive or not. In the viewing order of this recap guide, we don’t have confirmation as to what happens to Lily. But it doesn’t look good.

As Hannah leaves with Ava, Ray is arrested and put in handcuffs. That’s how “Violet” comes to a conclusion, and of course, we have so many questions as to what happens next. What we do know is this is what puts Ray in prison, and this is why Ava starts to look after Hannah.
