Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 is finally here, and we’re digging into that heartbreaking season finale twist. Spoilers ahead for the new season’s ending.

Netflix’s hit romantic drama based on Kristin Hannah’s book series of the same name has returned after a year-long hiatus with the first half of the show’s second and final season. The first part of Firefly Lane season 2 addresses the big event that leads to a dramatic falling out between Tully and Kate.

Massive spoilers ahead for Firefly Lane season 2 part 1

Below we get into how things ended in the Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 finale. If you haven’t watched the last episode or don’t want to be spoiled, now is your last chance to turn back!

Do Kate and Tully make up?

Kate and Tully do not get a chance to fix their friendship at the end of season 2 part 1. After their fallout, they spend a year not talking to each other, slowly trying to move on with their lives. Kate signs up for a creative writing class and tries befriending one of her classmates, but there’s no replacing Tully.

The season 2 part 1 finale ends with Kate being diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. She needs to start treatment right away. This devastating news motivates Kate to reach out to Tully for the first time in ages. Showing up unannounced at Tully’s building, Kate tries pounding on her best friend’s door.

Unfortunately, just before Kate arrived, Tully left for Antarctica, where she accepted a job working on a global warming documentary. The season ends with Kate left crying on Tully’s doorstep.

Where does Firefly Lane leave off in the 1970s and the 1980s?

In the 1980s, the moment Kate arrives too late at Tully’s door is paralleled by Johnny showing up at Tully and Kate’s apartment to tell Kate he loves her and wants to get back together. Johnny is too late. Minutes before he arrives, Tully drives Kate to the airport so she can go to Europe with her new boyfriend, Theo.

But we know that Kate and Johnny eventually get married, so the 1980s cliffhanger isn’t much of a cliffhanger. In the present, the season even ends with Johnny proposing to Kate again and her finally saying yes. Of course, that happens before Kate’s diagnosis. I’m assuming part 2 will deal with Kate and Tully reconciling and Kate coming to terms with her disease and treatment plan.

The 1970s storyline has the lowest stakes, with Tully and Kate cleaning the house to prepare for a visit from Cloud’s parole officer. They think one of Cloud’s friends overdosed and subsequently stashed his body under the stairs, but luckily he comes to later after the parole officer leaves, and all is well, at least until the next visit.
