Since its release on Netflix in February 2021, Firefly Lane has been one of the biggest surprise hits on the streamer. Grey’s Anatomy vet Katherine Heigl and Scrubs star Sarah Chalke star in the series about lifelong friends, based on the Firefly Lane books by Kristin Hannah.

In the series, Heigl and Chalke star as Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey respectively, best friends who met as teenagers in the 1970s and weather all of life’s ups and downs together into their adult years in the early 2000s. Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing for the inseparable duo.

When we last left off with Tully and Kate in the first season’s finale, a rift in the future teased an estrangement between the best friends. Throughout the years, Tully and Kate have fought and briefly put their friendship on ice, but this time felt different.

If you have read the Firefly Lane books, you might already have an idea about what will happen next in the winding road of Tully and Kate’s story. But for the newbies wondering, how many books are there and in what order should you read them?

Firefly Lane books in order

The first of the Firefly Lane books by Kristin Hannah has the same title as the hit Netflix series. Firefly Lane was first published in February 2008 and became a bestseller well into 2009. It’s been reported that the book has sold over 1.2 million copies as of 2015, but that number has surely skyrocketed since the success of the Netflix series.

In 2013, Hannah published the follow-up novel titled Fly Away, which takes place following the events of the first novel and appears to be part of the inspiration for the upcoming second season. After all, the 16-episode final season, to be released in two parts, will cover much more ground than the first season and bring this decade-spanning story to a bittersweet close.

Check out part of the spoiler-free Fly Away synopsis from Hannah’s website:

"“As teenagers in the seventies, Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey were inseparable. Tully, with her make-up and her halter tops, was the coolest girl in school. Kate, with her glasses and her high water jeans, was the geeky outsider. But chance and circumstance brought them together and through the decades they were devoted to each other. This was the story of Tully and Kate which began on a quiet street called Firefly Lane. Best friends forever. But sometimes stories end, and we have to find a way to begin again.”"
