Dead to Me season 3, episode 4 recap: Where Do We Go Now?

It’s time for Steve’s funeral and despite their desire to avoid the event altogether, Jen and Judy prepare to attend in support of Ben and Eileen. Before the funeral, Judy goes to the doctor to get the full results of her scans. She has stage four cervical cancer, it’s already spread to her liver. She’ll need to start several treatments of chemotherapy right away.

The funeral goes about as well as you could expect. It’s awkward for both Jen and Judy, especially because it’s an open casket. But it turns out Steve’s body isn’t in the coffin, just his suit. As Lorna so poignantly puts it, “You can’t pour soup into a suit.”

Afterward, Judy goes to work and springs Michelle’s mother Flo (Renee Victor) from the nursing home for a rare day out in the sun. But considering that Flo is sick and Judy took her out without telling anyone, it’s no surprise that when she returns everyone is pissed. Judy gets fired and Michelle isn’t thrilled with Judy either.

But the incident has at least one benefit: it reunites Judy and Michelle. Michelle gets over her anger pretty fast, I mean it’s hard to stay mad at Judy.

Across town, Jen returns home with Ben during the wake and finds herself stuck inside a creepy room filled with old Victorian dolls. Ben has to come to rescue her. After, Jen brings him into her car to share how she copes with things. Yes, she breaks out the heavy metal music. Ben isn’t as into it as Jen is. He’d rather listen to Patsy Cline or Willie Nelson.

While they’re in the car, bonding over their grief, Ben finally comes clean about the hit-and-run accident. He confesses to Jen that he was the one who hit her and Judy. Surprisingly, Jen is totally okay with it and kisses him. Maybe it’s not too surprising since Ben’s admission probably alleviates a tiny bit of the guilt Jen feels for keeping him in the dark about Steve’s death.

Meanwhile, Judy and Michelle also hit it off once again and fall into bed together. We find out that Michelle has plans to move to Sonoma and open a restaurant. That night, just as Michelle is starting to fall asleep, Judy tells her she has cancer, but Michelle has already passed out and doesn’t hear her.
