The Witcher renewed for season 4: Geralt recast

Netflix announced some major changes coming to The Witcher for its fourth season. Henry Cavill is out. Who will play Geralt of Rivia?

In some unsurprising news, The Witcher is officially renewed or season 4. However, this renewal news did come with a decision we never thought would happen. Henry Cavill is leaving the series.

He will still be part of the third season, which is set for a summer 2023 release. He just won’t return for the fourth season, and we don’t a clear reason why. Could it be Superman related? Possibly, but we’re more concerned about who will take on the role of Geralt of Rivia.

Who will play Geralt in The Witcher season 4

We already know who is stepping in some big shoes. Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth is taking on the role of Geralt of Rivera from The Witcher season 4 (and possibly onward).

TVLine brought us a quote from Cavill about passing on the role to Hemsworth:

"“As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” Cavill continued. “Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”"

There isn’t any word on what the fourth season will bring, except a change of face for the iconic role. That’s not surprising considering the third season hasn’t yet aired. Season 3 will pick up off the back of events from the second season, which saw Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer together but their relationships strained.

Yennifer had taken Ciri into danger in an attempt to get her powers back. When Geralt learned the truth, he understandably pushed Yennifer away. However, Yennifer is the only one who can help Ciri control her powers so is allowed to stick around for now.

There had been rumors that The Witcher had been quietly renewed for both seasons 4 and 5. Now it’s not too clear if the fifth season will happen with the change of lead actor. We also don’t have any idea as to when the fourth season could premiere. It’s probably not until 2024 at the very earliest.
