When Dahmer arrived on Netflix on Sept. 21, no one could have predicted the success the limited series starring Evan Peters as convicted killer Jeffrey Dahmer would enjoy.

Dahmer racked up over 196 million hours of viewership within its first week, then pulled in a whopping 299.8 million hours of viewership in its second week making it the second most-watched English-language series in a week behind Stranger Things season 4.

Following the success of the show, viewers have been eager to know how Netflix might follow up the show and, more specifically, what true story Ryan Murphy and his team could choose to adapt next.

So when rumors began swirling that Netflix is developing a limited series about the life of Aaron Hernandez starring Jon Bernthal, the internet went into a frenzy. But is there any truth to the rumors?

Is an Aaron Hernandez series starring Jon Bernthal coming to Netflix?

If you’re hoping to see Jon Bernthal tackle the role of Aaron Hernandez for a Netflix limited series, we’re sorry to report that Netflix is not currently developing a project about Hernandez. The confusion seems to have started when a spoof account shared a fictional report which indicated Bernthal was tapped to star as the former NFL star.

While Netflix is not currently working on an Aaron Hernandez series starring Jon Bernthal, Ryan Murphy — aka the man beyond Dahmer — is developing a series that would focus on Hernandez’s story.

Last August, FX ordered two additional spinoffs of Murphy’s American Story franchise including American Sports Story, a new anthology series set to re-examine prominent events involving a sports figure. In the first season, American Sports Story will explore the rise and fall of NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez with an exploration of “the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.”

No casting announcements have been made for the show just yet, so it’s possible Murphy could look to bring Benthal into the mix; however, it’s important to note the project will be airing on FX, not Netflix.
