Don’t F**k with Cats director Mark Lewis is back with another docuseries for Netflix. True crime fans have been kept sated by Netflix these past few months with a near-constant barrage of content like the controversial Jeffrey Dahmer series Monster and its follow-up doc Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes. Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi is already stirring up some criticism for how it addresses conspiracy theories.
The new British documentary series is about the disappearance of 15-year-old Emanuela Orlandi and whether or not the Vatican had anything to do with it. As you can imagine, creating a true crime show about the Pope and the Vatican will raise some eyebrows, but this particular case has fascinated people for decades.
In 1983, Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican employee, mysteriously vanished in front of the Opus Dei church. Suspects have ranged from Turkish terrorists to the Italian mafia to Pope John Paul II.
What is Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi about?
Vatican Girl tries to figure out what happened to Orlandi and whether or not she could still be alive after all this time. The series digs into just about every possible angle one could possibly imagine regarding this case, including talking to gangsters and dissecting terrorist plots.
There is also a disturbing theory that Orlandi might have been sexually assaulted by one of the cardinals; therefore, her disappearance could have been part of a blackmail scheme to protect the Vatican. The documentary also addresses a suspect who came forward claiming to have orchestrated Orlandi’s kidnapping, but his credibility is soon called into question.
