Luckiest Girl Alive is a dark drama on Netflix based on the 2015 bestselling novel of the same name by Jessica Knoll. Knoll also wrote the film’s screenplay, adapting her own book for the screen.
Mila Kunis stars as Ani FaNelli, a New York-based writer on the verge of getting married to her fiancé Luke (Finn Wittrock), but she’s still struggling to come to terms with traumatic events that happened to her as a teenager. Everything comes to the surface when Ani is approached by a filmmaker planning a documentary about what happened at Ani’s high school many years earlier.

Arthur grew tired of Dean and people like him always getting away with everything, so he and his friend orchestrated the mass shooting at the school. Ani doesn’t know anything about it, but after shooting Dean, Arthur gives Ani the gun and tells her to finish the job. She can’t bring herself to do it and stabs Arthur in the neck.

Ani does finally confront Dean as an adult. He tries to play the victim card and plead with Ani not to come forward because he has a “wife and a daughter.” Then he threatens her and says he’ll tell everyone he still thinks she had something to do with the shooting if she comes forward.
Ani gets him to admit that he did rape her when she was a teenager and, unbeknownst to Dean, has recorded their entire conversation. It seems like she recorded it for her own benefit, as we later see her replaying the audio through headphones to repeatedly listen to Dean’s confession.

After Ani’s story gets published, we get to see a lot of women reading the essay. Many of them are profoundly moved by Ani’s story and leave comments praising her for her bravery and thanking her for coming forward.
Ani slowly moves on from Luke and goes to work at her dream job at The New York Times. In the film’s final moments, a woman confronts Ani on the streets of New York and makes a snide comment about how she supports Dean and Ani is just enjoying her “fifteen minutes of fame.” Ani tells her to go f**k herself. “Gotta work on that delivery, FaNelli, but f**k, that felt good.”
