All Stephen King movies streaming on Netflix right now

Halloween always puts me in the mood for horror and that means revisiting books, movies, and television shows adapted from Stephen King’s works. Considered the “King” of horror, it makes sense to marathon Stephen King movies at this time of year. Plus, Netflix is releasing Mr. Harrigan’s Phone soon, which is adapted from a King novella.

From the 2017 remake of It to Gerald’s Game starring Carla Gugino, Netflix has several excellent Stephen King movies available to stream. Several of the movies are Netflix Original films, too, meaning they’re not likely to leave the streamer anytime soon.

Unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t currently have any King shows, like The Outsider or Castle Rock, available to stream. You can check out The Outsider on HBO, Castle Rock on Hulu, and The Stand is on Paramount+. Mr. Mercedes is also available to stream on Peacock.

It: Chapter One (2017)

Based on the popular novel by Stephen King, It: Chapter One is easily one of the best King adaptations. Set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine, a popular setting for King’s works, It: Chapter One picks up at the start of a new 27-year cycle when a horrific creature starts stalking and murdering the children of Derry.

“It” is an eldritch monstrosity that often takes the shape of a terrifying clown, Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard). A group of outcast kids get drawn into the mystery and make a promise to destroy It once and for all.

The Mist (2007)

Another acclaimed King adaptation, The Mist is actually based on one of his short stories. A powerful storm damages David Drayton’s (Thomas Jane) home so he and his son journey into town for supplies.

But while they’re there, a thick fog rolls in harboring deadly creatures. As if that’s not scary enough, David and his son become trapped in a grocery store with a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) who thinks sacrifice is the only way to pacify the monsters.

Gerald’s Game (2017)

Imagine that you’re just trying to have fun with your husband, get a little kinky with handcuffs… then he dies and you’re left handcuffed to the bed in the middle of nowhere with no way to get help. That’s the predicament Jesse Burlingame finds herself in after she and her husband travel to a secluded lake house for a romantic getaway.

Not long after slapping on the handcuffs, Jesse’s husband dies, leaving her stranded and trapped as she slowly becomes delirious. Gerald’s Game is a great movie and it stars Carla Gugino, who is excellent as always. Plus, it’s directed by Mike Flanagan, the guy who gave us The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and the upcoming Midnight Club.

In the Tall Grass (2019)

In the Tall Grass is actually based on a novella that Stephen King wrote with his son Joe Hill. Like the title suggests, the film is about something evil lurking in the tall grass. A brother and sister venture into the field to rescue a young boy and soon discover that something dark is lurking within.

Out of all of the movies on this list, In the Tall Grass is probably the most negatively received by fans and critics, but I always say you should watch movies and judge for yourself! Who knows, maybe you’ll like it.

1922 (2017)

There seems to be a trend with a lot of the Stephen King movies on Netflix in that most of them are adapted from novellas or short stories rather than novels. 1922 is based on a novella from King’s Full Dark, No Stars collection. King also worked on the film’s screenplay. The movie is about a farmer who conspires to kill his wife and convinces his son to help him. After the deed is done, the pair grow increasingly delusional in the wake of the murder.

Mr. Harrigan’s Phone (2022)

Based on the short story of the same name in Stephen King’s If It Bleeds collection, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone stars It actor Jaeden Martell as a teenager who befriends a reclusive billionaire (Donald Sutherland). Craig (Martell) has been seeing Mr. Harrigan (Sutherland) a few times a week since he was a kid to read to him and help with odd jobs around his house.

They form a bond that Craig honors by gifting Mr. Harrigan an iPhone. He quickly becomes obsessed with the phone. But when Mr. Harrigan dies, Craig is shocked to find that he’s still receiving texts and calls from Mr. Harrigan from beyond the grave and then people start dying. It should be noted that while most of the movies on this list are horror films, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is more of a dark drama.
