Lena Dunham’s new movie Catherine Called Birdy is a coming-of-age medieval comedy starring Game of Thrones actress Bella Ramsey in the title role. Based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Karen Cushman, Catherine Called Birdy follows a 14-year-old girl as she navigates growing up in a medieval kingdom and trying to avoid potential suitors hand-selected by her father.
The movie made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in early September. This weekend, Catherine Called Birdy will debut in select theaters across the country.
Ramsey is joined in the cast by Andrew Scott, Billie Piper, Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, Ralph Ineson, and Russell Brand. Dunham directs a screenplay she wrote. Thus far, the movie has received great reviews from critics, saying it’s a fresh and inventive take on the coming-of-age genre.
Is Catherine Called Birdy on Netflix?
Dunham’s latest feature film is not streaming on Netflix, but a few medieval comedies are available on the platform.
- Disenchantment
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Merlin is also streaming, and while not a “comedy,” it’s a fantasy adventure series with a more lighthearted tone than some of the heavier period fare within the genre.
Those looking to support Bella Ramsey could consider watching the animated show Hilda or The Worst Witch. Billie Piper stars in the Netflix film Collateral. If you like Dunham and her style of comedy, projects like Easy, Crashing, or This Is 40, might be appealing and all are currently available on Netflix.
