The highly anticipated crime drama series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story finally lands on Netflix on Sept. 21. It chronicles the horrifying true story of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer, and the grisly murders he committed between 1978 and 1991. After a murderous spree that lasted for over a decade, Dahmer was finally captured and arrested in 1991. He was sentenced to 16 terms of life imprisonment but was later beaten to death by a fellow inmate. But what about Dahmer’s family? Where is his brother, David Dahmer? Is he still alive? Jeffrey Dahmer had somewhat of a rough childhood. His parents consistently struggled with marital issues, which left Dahmer feeling neglected and alone. His father, Lionel Dahmer, spent much of his time away from home while his mother, Joyce, suffered from bouts of depression. A teacher at his elementary school even noticed how Dahmer had changed. He began to show signs of abandonment. Then, in 1966, Joyce gave birth to Dahmer’s younger brother, David Dahmer. He even got to name him, but their relationship took a turn for the worse after Dahmer noticed his brother was given more love and attention by their parents.

Once Dahmer’s parents divorced, he decided to live with his father while his mother and younger brother moved to Wisconsin to live with relatives. A short time after, Dahmer committed his first brutal murder.

After Dahmer was convicted of murdering and dismembering 17 young men and boys, his family’s lives were forever changed. They were constantly harassed, and some family members even moved and tried to put the past behind them. So, where is Jeffrey Dahmer’s family today?

What happened to Jeffrey Dahmer’s father?

While Jeffrey Dahmer was incarcerated, Lionel Dahmer and his new wife Shari regularly visited him until his death in 1994. Lionel even wrote a book titled A Father’s Story, where he tells his version of Jeffrey’s life and what it was like as the dad of an infamous serial killer. It’s unclear if Lionel Dahmer is still alive in 2022, but it appears so after doing some research.

According to an interview Lionel did with People in 1994, Lionel mentions how Jeffrey’s grandmother was scared to leave her house after enduring constant harassment by reporters sitting outside her home. Jeffrey’s grandmother pretty much lived the rest of her life in fear until her death in 1992 because of Jeffrey’s heinous crimes.

What happened to Joyce Flint?

As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Joyce moved to Fresno, California shortly before Jeffrey Dahmer was captured by police. There, she managed a retirement residence before becoming a case manager for the Central Valley AIDS Team. She worked with HIV and AIDS patients up until her death in 2000. According to an interview that Joyce did with Hard Copy, Joyce spoke to Jeffrey every Sunday night while he was incarcerated. Joyce also mentioned that she visited Jeffrey once while he was in prison.

What happened to David Dahmer?

After David Dahmer graduated from the University of Cincinnati, he changed his name, took on a new identity, and has never been seen or heard from again. David never did any interviews concerning his older brother and has completely disassociated from him and his unspeakable crimes. It’s unknown if David is still alive in 2022.
