Devil in Ohio episode 8 recap: “The Dawning”
While the people of Amontown are getting ready for their ceremony, Peter shows up at the dance, where Jules and Helen fill him in. He’s understandably angry that Suzanne went after Mae considering how dangerous the situation is, and they all pile into his car and drive off. They head back to their house to pick a few things up, but once Peter sees their front door was marked with the demonic symbol, he decides against it. They stay at the complex he’s now managing in a model apartment.
Suzanne shows up in Amontown and the ritual begins, with Mae’s father up at the altar reading from their book and going off on his own speech. Mae walks in wearing a white dress, white veil, and black crown as others watch.
Sheriff Wilkins finds Suzanne lurking around and she’s quick to get him with pepper spray before fighting him off. While doing so, a lit torch falls into a stack of wood, starting a fire.
Right before Mae has to agree to be the willing sacrifice, her father realizes the church is on fire and the ceremony is interrupted. Suzanne runs over to Mae and Abigail, and Mae tells her mom that she can come with them. The platform they’re standing on is now on fire, and Suzanne and Mae quickly jump down, leaving Abigail up there. Noah appears and tries to hurt Suzanne, but Mae hits him over the head with a shovel.
Abigail decides not to jump down from the platform, instead letting the fire consume her to become the sacrifice. Mae’s dad sees what’s happening and tells everyone that they are “saved!”
Suzanne and Mae run away, while Detective Lopez finds Wilkins. Alex explains that he should take the deal they’re going to offer him, but before their conversation can go further, Wilkins reaches for his gun. Alex then makes the decision to shoot Wilkins in self-defense, killing him.
Back home, Suzanne is still in therapy and it seems to be working. Now, she’s actually wanting it to work. She’s taking a break from her job and is committed to working on herself.
Peter visits Alex at the police station and finds out that he was promoted to a lieutenant. He thanks Alex for helping him, letting him know he received his insurance check from the fire. Brooks is now a police officer, and she goes with Alex over to Amontown after they successfully get a search warrant for Mae’s family. However, once they arrive, they realize everyone has fled.
It’s Thanksgiving and we see Peter accidentally burning his stuffing with the girls, while Suzanne and Mae are making a full dinner. However, they’re not all in the same place. As it’s revealed, Peter is still living in the model apartment with Jules, Helen, and Dani, while Suzanne is living with Mae at the house.
Suzanne comes over to the apartment to drop off a pie for the girls, with Mae waiting in the car. Peter is frustrated that she brought Mae along, telling Suzanne she doesn’t want her around the girls. Suzanne says that they are working on Mae getting her GED to eventually get a job, and then a permanent place of her own. But Peter doesn’t care about Mae. He wants Suzanne to get better and work on herself.
Just as Suzanne and Mae are about to dig in for Thanksgiving dinner, Alex calls and has major information to share. He tells Suzanne that Teddy’s SUV was found near Amontown after being reported missing the night of the dance. Thanks for security footage, Alex discovered that Mae actually brought the bouquet of white roses herself, and set it up to make it look like she had been triggered. He even checked with a flower shop who confirmed a young woman bought them. Alex says that Mae stole Teddy’s car during the dance and drove herself back to Amontown.
Suzanne hangs up and walks back to the dining room table, visibly shaken up. Mae urges her to start eating, and we then zoom out from the house and into the backyard, where we see there’s a new shrine. Now, Mae and Suzanne’s photos are next to each other in the middle of it, which could be interpreted in a number of ways. While it could mean that Suzanne and Mae are the next sacrifices for the cult, it could also just signal to the fact that Mae is obsessed with Suzanne and will never leave her side, despite Suzanne’s plans to find her permanent housing.
How ever you interpret it, it seems that Suzanne is now in danger. But because the screen cuts to black and there isn’t a post-credits scene, we can only predict what’ll happen next. Devil in Ohio is billed as a limited series, so it’s unlikely that it’ll get a second season. But that ending might warrant another installment!
All eight episodes of Devil in Ohio are now streaming on Netflix.
