Devil in Ohio episode 7 recap: “By Blood”

Mae is desperate to stay at the Mathis house after she overheard Peter tell Suzanne she has to leave. The penultimate episode opens up with Mae praying to her shrine to have her wish granted. But she gets interrupted by Suzanne, who calls her inside to share some big news.

Suzanne tells Mae that she needs a safer, more secure place to heal. There’s a place called Fernwell, a facility in Vermont that specializes in people like Mae. Suzanne has arranged for her to stay there, and Mae has been granted a full scholarship to attend. Mae’s first question is whether or not she can move back in with the family after she’s done at Fernwell, to which Suzanne explains that she won’t need to. “Sounds good to me,” Mae replies, but it’s not too convincing.

Detective Lopez catches the priest in a lie, and heads over to Suzanne’s to give her the latest updates. However, now that Mae is set to go to Vermont, she tells Alex that maybe closing the case is for the best. But once Alex tells her about the fire, that sparks something in Suzanne. They figure out that the priest could very well be Enoch, and they have to go talk to him immediately.

Helen breaks up with her boyfriend Teddy before the big school dance, explaining to her mom that things just weren’t right anymore. She also breaks the news that she wants to pursue a paid internship she was offered, and Suzanne is super supportive.

In a strange turn of events, Teddy shows back up later that night, leaving Helen confused. But Mae walks down the stairs and tells Helen and Jules that he’s there to pick her up for the dance. Weird. To make things even weirder, she’s wearing Suzanne’s old dress. The sisters are understandably creeped out as she walks out to Teddy’s car.

Suzanne heads over to the church to talk to the priest, and when she brings up Enoch’s name, the priest looks alarmed and tries to leave. But Alex is at the other door, and tells him they need to talk. The priest then admits to being Enoch, explaining how he was able to escape alive and change his identity. He says the cult marked Mae because they want to kill her and sacrifice her, alerting Suzanne to act fast.

Peter is questioned by the detective, who now fully believes he burned down the property himself. He refuses to talk without a lawyer. Soon after, Detective Lopez shows up and explains that it was most likely Mae’s father who arranged the fire, and he tells Peter he can go.

Jules calls out Mae for her behavior at the dance, while Suzanne drives over there and notices someone following her. Helen and Mae are both up for the “Harvest Queen,” but Helen ditches so she can spend time with Tatiana. Mae is crowned the queen and smiles wide up on stage while everyone claps for her. But she starts freaking out when she sees white roses in her bouquet and quickly flees the scene, leaving Jules concerned.

The car following Suzanne rear-ends her repeatedly before driving off, leaving her in shock. An ambulance arrives to examine her, but she’s adamant on driving home on her own. She shows up at the school dance and finds Jules, but they don’t know where Mae is. Suzanne is convinced the people of Amontown took her and she frantically leaves a message for Alex before driving off.

Episode 7 concludes with a ritual beginning in Amontown, as a man cuts his hand and lets it bleed over one of their symbols etched in a wooden floor. It’s the full moon, and all they need is Mae to go through with their plan.
