Devil in Ohio episode 5 recap: “Alight”

Throughout the show so far, crows have made appearances in ominous ways. And in the opening of episode 5, our suspicions about these crows are all but confirmed. The crows might not just be creepy — they might have sinister powers, too. The episode starts off with a scene from 1922, following a man who is entranced by a crow who whispers “follow me.”

This is my favorite episode of Devil in Ohio because it’s all about Halloween, plus a lot happens. The kids at the Mathis house are excited to be carving pumpkins and getting their costumes together, while Detective Lopez and Brooks indulge in Halloween candy at the station. Brooks drops the discovery that Enoch must’ve been at Remmingham Memorial if he was ever admitted after being “struck down,” the hospital where Suzanne works.

Tension starts to creep in between Jules and Mae when Jules finds out Mae hung out with a popular girl without her. Jules confides in Suzanne and tells her about the nighttime incident when she found Mae walking outside in the rain with the white rose.

Out in the woods at her shrine, Mae lights a candle and says a prayer, revealing that she took the dead crow to give up as an offering. But mid prayer, Suzanne finds Mae and questions what she’s doing. Surprisingly, Mae doesn’t lie about and instead comes clean about wanting to offer up items so her wish can be granted — her wish being able to stay with Suzanne.

Mae then opens up about a woman named Mary from Amontown. She explains that many years ago, her ancestors experienced trouble with their crops dying, and turned to a messenger crow who told them Lucifer could help them. Apparently, Mary was “special,” and gave herself up as an offering to Lucifer, which started a pattern. This pattern is the “chain” that Mae has referred to, the chain that “shall never be broken.”

Now that Amontown’s crops are dying again, a “special” one must offer themselves up once more just like Mary did. And, of course, that would be Mae.

Detective Lopez tells Suzanne about Enoch’s records potentially being at her hospital, but she tells him she isn’t able to dig them up because he wasn’t her patient. Discouraged, Alex urges Suzanne to get more information from Mae.

Over at school, Mae and Jules want to go to a bonfire for Halloween, but when Jules presents the idea to Isaac, he gets annoyed. He and Jules have Halloween plans every year, and he doesn’t want to break them just for a party.

Halloween night is going to be a hectic one, as Suzanne has to work a shift at the hospital and Peter has an important meeting about his property. Dani is going trick-or-treating with friends, while Jules, Mae, and Helen are going to the bonfire. Jules is annoyed when she discovers that Mae copied her costume.

Peter gets an offer from his associate to buy the house, but it’s a number he’s not satisfied with. Desperate for another loan extension, the bank tells him they are ready to foreclose on the property and he shouldn’t have gotten an extension to begin with. Of course, this is incredibly frustrating for Peter to hear.

While Dani is out trick-or-treating, her friends decide they want to go hang out with boys instead and ditch her, leaving her alone to go door-to-door for candy. She decides to call it a night, but not before accidentally eating something she’s allergic to. She doesn’t have her inhaler, and it becomes increasingly harder for her to breathe. Thankfully, she makes it home, but she has to get her inhaler before time runs out.

The bonfire is going well until Jules works up the courage to ask Sebastian to the dance. He devastates her by telling her that he had just asked Mae to be his date. Jules is desperate to leave the bonfire, but after Isaac shoots her down for a ride, she’s not sure what to do. She strikes up a conversation with a mystery man in a mask, and then confronts Mae for trying to steal Sebastian from her. But before they can hash things out, Sebastian tells them that someone called the cops and they have to leave.

The mysterious guy takes off his mask to reveal himself to be another teen, and he offers to give Jules a ride home.

In Amontown, the community looks ready for a ceremony, with members wearing dark cloaks and creepy crow masks. A few of the men come out with a pig, and you know where this is going. They sacrifice the animal for Lucifer while one man makes a speech. Alex is in the bushes snapping as many photos as he can.

Peter ends up at a bar and starts flirting with the bartender, likely trying to distract himself from his reality. Meanwhile, Suzanne sneaks onto a computer at the hospital to try and find the file for Enoch, but is caught red-handed.

Suzanne and Peter both get calls at the same time, with Suzanne’s co-worker running over to tell her something “personal” has happened, while Peter receives a phone call which leaves him rushing out of the bar. But while Suzanne is met with Dani in a hospital bed and Helen panicking, Peter drives to his property and sees that the entire house is up in flames. Firefighters are there trying to put it out, but the damage has already been done.

Episode 5 ends on a scary note when Jules is being driven home by the mystery man but realizes he isn’t going in the right direction. With a dead phone, she’s terrified to find out what’ll happen next.
