Devil in Ohio episode 4 recap: “Rely-upon”
Suzanne starts having dreams about Amon County and it’s evident this Mae situation has completely taken over her life. She’s slacking off at work and people are starting to notice.
Alex is hard at work trying to find any leads, driving out to Amontown and taking photos of some of the people he sees. He watches as a group of men file into a white van, and follows them as they drive away. Once they arrive at their location, Alex starts snapping photos of what he sees — women dressed in robes and men standing around with large sticks and a shovel.
As Jules starts getting closer to Mae, she photographs her and it turns out that Mae’s a great model. Suzanne seeks out the author of a book on cults to talk about Amontown and what could’ve happened to Mae. According to the author, the town calls themselves “The Devil’s Own,” and no one ever leaves. She suspects that with the way Mae was cut, they’ll try and take her back. She advises Suzanne to find someone else who has also escaped a cult to talk to Mae.
On her drive home, Suzanne notices a white fan tailing her. Fortunately, they soon turn the other way, but not before giving Suzanne a major fright. Meanwhile, Alex befriends a police tech named Brooks who starts assisting him on the investigation.
Peter finally comes clean about the house he’s trying to sell to Suzanne, who’s understandably bothered he wasn’t honest with her.
Trying to get answers, Suzanne opens up to Mae and tells her that she ran away from home and lived with her aunt growing up. She asks Mae if she knows anyone who tried to leave Amontown. Mae is forthcoming with the details, surprisingly, telling Suzanne that a boy named Enoch ran away and was then “struck down” by Lucifer. Suzanne is quick to share this with Alex, saying she thinks that this Enoch person is probably still alive somewhere.
Sebastian features one of Jules’ photos of Mae in the newspaper, and Mae starts getting a ton of attention. Isaac becomes jealous of their friendship and annoyed that Jules is spending more time with Mae than him.
Later that night, the family throws a karaoke party for Dani’s birthday. Before leaving, they’re told that a mystery man came and paid the bill. Someone’s definitely watching them, and probably has been for a while. We then cut to the family’s home, where no one is supposed to be. But someone’s in there, and they leave a white rose for Mae on her bed.
In the middle of the night, Jules is awoken to the front door opening, and she runs after Mae outside as she walks slowly in the rain. “The chain shall not be broken,” Mae can be heard chanting. Jules hugs her, and Mae tells her that she doesn’t want to go back. Jules assures her that she doesn’t have to go back, but Mae doesn’t seem convinced. They walk back inside as someone sitting in a car nearby watches.
