Devil in Ohio episode 3 recap: “Mother’s Keeper”
Though Suzanne is providing a better life for Mae, that doesn’t mean they’re exactly safe. When episode 3 opens up, we see that someone has marked Suzanne’s car with one of the creepy symbols. Without noticing the symbol, she heads to court with Mae for a custody hearing. But when Mae’s parents don’t show up, Suzanne is awarded temporary custody for an additional 90 days. This is a relief for both Suzanne and Mae.
Now that Mae is staying with Suzanne longer, she’ll have to be enrolled in school. She’s about the same age as Jules, so she’ll be in her class, something Jules isn’t too thrilled about.
While talking to Suzanne about her parents, Mae thinks back to a disturbing memory from Amontown. The scene shows Mae waking up and getting out of bed quietly, only for all the other girls sleeping in the room to see her and start yelling that she’s “the chosen one.” Mae is taken by her mom, Abigail, but before something bad happens, Mae’s memory ends. She tells Suzanne that she doesn’t want to talk about her mom.
Later that day, the family arrives home and Mae notices the symbol drawn on Suzanne’s car. She frantically finds a bucket and sponge, acting like she wants to wash the car, and scrubs it off. For whatever reason, no one finds this suspicious.
Tension at the house rises when Suzanne almost ditches Peter on their date night because of Mae, and Jules complains about Mae affecting her social life. Mae starts to freak out Dani when they have a one-on-one chat. Meanwhile, Helen has some internal issues she’s working through, as she’s dating a boy named Teddy (Ty Wood), but might have feelings for one of her girl friends, Tatiana.
While Suzanne and Peter are on their date, Mae recalls the same memory from before, thinking back to the night she was taken by her community for some sort of ritual. Calling out for her mom, Mae’s hands are bound with rope by an older woman.
Detective Lopez requests an interview with Mae’s parents after finding the knife, and he’s told they’ll be coming in the next day for questioning. He’s relieved to know his case might actually be going somewhere. Unfortunately, when the day comes, a lawyer representing the couple shows up instead.
Mae and Jules start to bond finally, though Mae still doesn’t want to reveal any details about her past or what happened to her. They spend more time together at school, with Jules giving Mae the rundown of their classmates and introducing her to Isaac and Sebastian.
After finding out the news that Mae’s parents didn’t show for the interview with Alex, Suzanne skips out on work and decides to take matters into her own hands. She goes to the address of Mae’s parents and drops a note in their mailbox, urging Abigail to give her a call about Mae. Probably not the smartest move!
On her way home, Suzanne makes a pit stop and starts asking about Mae’s family. She’s immediately urged to leave as a group of men surround her until she gets in her car and speeds off. Later that night, Suzanne checks her mailbox and finds the note she wrote for Abigail. Frightened, she looks around before rushing back inside.
By the end of the episode, we see Mae’s memory continue. Sadly, Mae’s mom does not want to help her but rather goes along with the ritual, putting some sort of black crown on Mae’s head and nothing that she “told them to be gentle.” We don’t know exactly what she’s referring to, but it could definitely have to do with that scar on Mae’s back. Suddenly, Mae is standing in front of a group of hooded spectators, as a masked person wearing black wings stands behinds her. They’re all in a room with an upside down cross hanging above them.
Mae has certainly gone through some trauma.
