Devil in Ohio episode 2 recap: “Sanctuary”
Mae is trying to get used to her new life as Suzanne assures her they will find her a new home. She takes Mae to a family services center where she is evaluated for foster care. Meanwhile, Suzanne meets Detective Lopez at the hospital and she tells him everything she knows, although it’s not a lot. She’s wary of giving out information, though the detective, who tells her to call him Alex, seems trustworthy enough.
Because no one will buy his property, Peter successfully extends his loan payments, but he’s going to have to figure things out soon. The house will go under foreclosure if he can’t come up with the money.
Suzanne’s co-worker at the hospital Rhoda (Samantha Ferris) finds a foster care family, who despite has a full house, is willing to take Mae in. But when they go there to check it out, it becomes obvious it’s not a good fit for Mae. The place is chaotic, with a crying baby and multiple kids running around. Mae would have to share a bedroom with other girls, and would only have a cot to sleep on. She can tell quickly that she wouldn’t feel safe there.
At the store afterward, Mae gives Suzanne a scare by leaving and walking out in the parking lot without telling her. She tells Suzanne she can’t stay in the foster home. “There was no place to hide,” she says.
Mae continues to creep Jules out despite her efforts to befriend her, but she takes an interest in Jules’ photography. She makes a doll out of a cornhusk for Jules, but it comes off as kind of strange.
Alex drives out to Amon County to try and find any leads, stopping at the cornfield to look around. He finds a knife with dried blood around the spot Mae was found, and he follows footsteps through the field. He sees that some of the corn has started rotting, and then finds a scarecrow complete with a dead pig’s head on top. Creepy. Beneath the scarecrow’s clothing, Alex finds a strange symbol carved into the wood. Even creepier!
When Alex gets back to his car, Sheriff Wilkins is waiting for him. But he’s not there to cooperate. Alex says he needs to interview Mae’s family, and asks why no one has filed a missing person report for her. Wilkins says he’ll question her parents for him instead. This obviously isn’t going to be an easy case to crack for the detective.
Suzanne decides she’ll take care of Mae a little longer, assuring Rhoda it won’t be permanent. Again, as she makes these big decisions without talking to her family first, Peter and Jules still seem annoyed about Mae being there. Jules sees the scar on Mae’s back and is disturbed, and Suzanne comforts her later.
Out in the woods at night, Mae makes some type of shrine, taking a dead crow that hit the house window earlier and presenting it like a sacrifice. She carves one of those odd symbols on a tree, no doubt something her family back in Amon County taught her. Before the screen cuts to black, Mae bows down and whispers “thank you” to whoever it is she’s summoning.
