Running with the Devil: Where is John McAfee now?

Netflix has been producing lots of successful documentaries lately. From Tiger King to The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes. The most recent doc to be released is Running With the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee.

The film follows the computer programmer, businessman, and two-time presidential candidate. McAfee is the inventor of one of the most known pieces of software: McAfee Anti-Virus. At his peak, the computer genius was worth $100 million. But when his neighbor was murdered, he fled.

As he fled, the businessman invited a film crew to capture his life as a fugitive. Netflix brings never-before broadcast footage that shows his time on the run. It also explores McAfee’s prison escape and his claims of having “hacked the world.” The revealing footage and interviews are with the tech pioneer himself.

After trying to run for political office, authorities discovered he’d failed to file his U.S. income taxes for four years. He fled the country and went to Spain. In October 2020, the Spanish police found and arrested him. McAfee was found dead on June 23, 2021, at age 75.

On the day of his death, the Spanish National Court approved his extradition to the U.S. According to British GQ, correctional officers found McAfee dead in his cell, having apparently hanged himself hours after the ruling passed.

The news outlet reports that though his death was ruled a suicide, his wife Janice believes her husband would never have done that. Conspiracy theories began to circulate, especially due to a tweet he posted the day he was arrested.
