It's time for The Umbrella Academy to try to save the world one final time! On Aug. 8, 2024, The Umbrella Academy comes to an end with the release of the show's fourth and final season. Sadly, our final journey will be a short one as the season will only feature six episodes, but if the trailer is any indication we should be for an unforgettable final sendoff for the beloved series.
On July 9, Netflix dropped the official trailer for the final season which unsurprisingly finds the Hargreeves siblings again trying to stop the end of the world from coming. The trailer tees up the final season with hints of what's to come as the Hargreeves are thrust together again and must unearth the key to saving the world... which this time seems to be connected to Ben and the mystery behind how he died.
Check out the trailer for the final season below:
Who started cutting onions? No one, okay, I'll admit it was just my allergies making me misty eyed watching the final season trailer. These characters are so much fun and I'm not quite ready for their journey to come to an end but I'm hoping the show sticks the landing with a final season and series finale that leaves us Brellies satisfied.
Of course, if the trailer left you wanting more there is also a teaser trailer that Netflix dropped earlier this year that really brings the two spots together.

As part of Geeked Week 2023, Netflix shared the new teaser art for season 4 and a fun featurette featuring the cast describing the new season, and they’ve got lots of great things to say about it! Ritu Arya, who plays Lila Pitts, describes it as “the best season yet,” and Justin H. Min, our lovable (and not-so-lovable) Ben, has said he’ll stick with calling it “sexy.” Expect to see all the usual Hargreeves siblings shenanigans, spectacle, twists, and so much more.
The Umbrella Academy season 3 debuted on June 22, 2022, and we finally found out what happens between the Umbrellas and the Sparrow Academy. Last we saw of our favorite Hargreeves siblings, they were battling it out against the Commission and trying to find a way home. But when they got back to their present-day timeline, everything was changed.
For those interested in seeing what the cast has to say about the fourth season, watch the featurette that was released in 2023 here:
What else do we know about the fourth and final season? Let's get into it.
Synopsis and episode count
Steve Blackman, the showrunner, confirmed that there will only be six episodes in The Umbrella Academy season 4. In each of the first three seasons, there were 10 episodes. So, it’s going to be quite a bit shorter than the first three seasons.
Blackman has apparently deleted his X (formerly Twitter) account, so we can’t link the tweet he shared, but he did tell concerned fans not to worry about the shortened episode count, promising “you’re going to love them.” There will be 36 episodes in The Umbrella Academy by the time the season finishes.
We don’t know all of the episode titles of The Umbrella Academy season 4 yet. We probably won’t find out that information until right before the final season, although Netflix has given fans a sneak peek at episode titles for some shows months in advance.
We do know the episode titles for the first and last episodes of season 4, as Blackman previously shared them on Instagram:
- Season 4 premiere title: “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want” written by Steve Blackman and Jesse McKeown
- Series finale title: “The End of Beginning” written by Steve Blackman and directed by Paco Cabezas
As for what to expect this season? Well, in a twist we all saw coming, the Hargreeves siblings are going to embark on a journey to save the world one final time. There are going to be twists and turns along the way as the team work to finally set things right and save the world once and for all. Eager for more information on the final episodes? Check out the offical syopsis from Netflix below:
"The Hargreeves siblings have scattered after the climactic showdown at the Hotel Oblivion led to a complete reset of their timeline. Stripped of their powers, each is left to fend for themselves and find a new normal — with wildly varying degrees of success. Yet the trappings of their uncanny new world prove too hard to ignore for very long. Their father Reginald, alive and well, has stepped out of the shadows and into the public eye, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire. A mysterious association known as The Keepers holds clandestine meetings believing the reality they’re living in is a lie and a great reckoning is coming. As these strange new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time — and risk upsetting the shaky peace they’ve all endured so much to secure — to finally set things right."
Cast
Along with the renewal announcement, Netflix confirmed which cast members and main characters we will be seeing in the final season. We shared the season 4 cast list below:
- Elliot Page as Viktor Hargreeves
- Tom Hopper as Luther Hargreeves
- David Castañeda as Diego Hargreeves
- Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves
- Robert Sheehan as Klaus Hargreeves
- Aidan Gallagher as Five Hargreeves
- Justin H. Min as Ben Hargreeves
- Ritu Arya as Lila Pitts
- Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreeves
- Lisa Repo-Martell as Abigail Hargreeves
- Nick Offerman as Dr. Gene Thibedeau
- Megan Mullally as Dr. Jean Thibedeau
- David Cross as Sy Grossman
It’s been confirmed that Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, and David Cross will also star in The Umbrella Academy season 4. Offerman and Mullally, who are married in real life, will play Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau in the new season. Cross will play Sy Grossman.
Per Deadline, the Thibedeaus are “a married pair of community college professors from New Mexico who wear sensible footwear and suffer from the most extreme case of deja vu this timeline has ever seen,” while Grossman is an entrepreneur and family man who will do anything to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
There’s also reason to expect cast members from previous seasons, including the Sparrows from season 3, to return for season 4. It’s a short season so there might not be room for everyone, but I think we could see Cazzie David, Genesis Rodriguez, Britne Oldford, Justin Cornwell, and Jake Epstein in the fourth season.
The art itself cleverly uses what appears to be a typical subway map, except the “stops” are designated moments in the lives of the Hargreeves, marking important events that have happened to characters like Allison, Five, Klaus, Viktor, and Diego throughout their time-hopping antics across the previous three seasons.
I’m curious as to what “Ben released” in year unknown could mean. It seems like subways and Ben as a character might both be integral to the final season. Maybe the subway is some way to time travel, I mean it wouldn’t be the first time a show did that (see Russian Doll)! And the final moment of season 3 did show Ben (or some version of him) riding a subway alone in Seoul…
We’ll share more updates about The Umbrella Academy season 4 as we find out!
