Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery logline, release date, cast photo, and more

Knives Out 2 is probably one of Netflix’s most highly-anticipated new films coming in 2022. When news broke that Netflix had invested in Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3, fans were ecstatic, both because now the films will be more accessible and because that confirms a trilogy! And on June 13, 2022, Netflix confirmed the sequel’s official title will be: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

The original film directed and written by Rian Johnson premiered in 2019 and was one of the most entertaining movies of the year, even earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed the first film, is back to write and direct the two Netflix movies.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery release date

On Aug. 22, 2022, Netflix officially announced the release date for Knives Out 2. The sequel will be released on Friday, Dec. 23, just two days ahead of the Christmas holiday. Netflix’s announcement also states Glass Onion will have a limited theatrical release with dates to be announced.

Netflix previously confirmed that the movie would come out during the 2022 holiday season, and we had predicted a release in either November or December. Now that the date has been set, we can start planning for one of the most anticipated new Netflix movies of the year.

It makes sense since Netflix likes to save a few significant projects for the end of the year, similar to what theaters do. Likewise, Netflix will release the eagerly awaited Enola Holmes 2 in November, and there’s plenty more movies to come this year.

Knives Out 2 cast

Knives Out had a huge cast with huge stars, and we’re proud to report that the sequel is following suit with an equally stellar line-up. To start, Daniel Craig will be back as Benoit Blanc. Right now, Craig appears to be the only returning cast member.

What will Knives Out 2 be about?

Netflix has not given us an official synopsis for the movie yet, but they did share the film’s logline along with the official title.

From Netflix, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will follow Detective Benoit Blanc as he “travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.”

What does Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery mean?

What the heck is a “glass onion”? People immediately began to theorize about what the mysterious title could mean as soon as it was announced. Interestingly, “Glass Onion” is the name of a song by The Beatles, which does not appear to be a coincidence. Onions are synonymous with layers, as we’ve all seen Shrek, and it’s also referenced in the logline that Blanc will need “peel back the layers of a mystery.”

But the “glass” aspect connotes a layer of transparency. It sounds like this is a movie that will dig deeply into a  case where everything seems obvious on the surface, but as Blanc digs deeper he discovers that not everything is as it initially appeared. However, he won’t know that until he gets to know the suspects.

Is there a Knives Out 2 teaser yet?

No photos or footage has been released for the sequel yet, but Netflix did share some motion art showcasing the new title announcement.
