Netflix Echoes episode 6 recap: Fire

In the beginning of Echoes episode 6, Gina awakes in the hospital and immediately asks about her baby. The nurse breaks the news that she’s lost the pregnancy, and another nurse informs her that her family is on the way to pick her up, having assumed she was “the girl that went missing.” Once the nurses leave the room, Gina tears her IV out and leaves the hospital.

With Georgia (Dylan’s grandmother) as an ally, Gina calls Leni and falsely tells her that Towers and Payne are after her and she needs help. Leni then arrives to find Georgia in distress and her home ransacked, giving Gina enough time to plant the knife in Leni’s car. She fell directly into Gina’s trap.

Floss presses Leni on why Gina would frame her for murder, and she claims Gina has always been unstable. Because of Leni pointing the finger back at Gina, Floss arrests Gina for the murder of the man who died in the church fire 25 years ago. While being questioned by Floss, Gina continues to deflect and recounts the events of the church fire.

As Gina and Dylan have sex surrounded by candles, Dylan goes to see if there’s someone else in the church when they hear a noise, and that’s when he discovers the fire. He gets Gina out and stays back to help the man out of the burning building. When Gina gets outside of the church, Leni pulls her away and forces her to change clothes to “protect” her.

Even though Floss doesn’t believe Leni started the fire (because how can she trust what either of them say when they’ve used their twinship to confuse people for years?), she questions Leni about the $60,000 she withdrew from Gina’s bank account. Once again, Leni lies that Gina gave her the check and claims to not have stolen ketamine.

On a hunch about both of the twins’ fingerprints being at the cabin, Floss confronts Leni about sharing Dylan with Gina. Just as Leni asks for a lawyer, Paula grabs Floss to check out footage of Gina leaving the hospital after having a miscarriage. Floss connects all of the dots, except for the timeline about when “Leni” went missing.

Finally, Gina comes clean about switching lives with Leni every year on their birthday since Mattie was born. Floss doesn’t believe her at first, prompting Gina to pull her hair into Leni’s signature side braid and speak with a Southern drawl. She uses this to disprove that Floss knows who’s in the video, and Floss rebuttals that if Gina’s telling the truth, the twins have been committing identity theft, bank fraud, polygamy, and other crimes. Gina bites back, “When you say ‘you,’ who exactly do you mean? ‘Cause I’m not sure I even know anymore.”

Because Floss can’t charge either of them, she lets them both go but promises Leni that she won’t stop until she figures out their tangled mess. After being released, Gina and Charlie speak openly about his knowledge of the switching. He loved them both, which is admittedly weird, but Gina is understanding or sorrowful for hurting him, which is also kind of weird.

Unfortunately, Leni isn’t met with that same acceptance from Jack when she returns home. He’s rightfully furious about the truth and what Leni has gotten their lives involved in. Mattie hears them fighting, but Jack sends her back to her home and threatens Leni that it’s the last time she will see her daughter. Jack lays down the law, and Leni leaves.

Gina brings groceries to her father’s house, but Claudia rebuffs her attempts at being normal. She asks her sister for understanding, something Claudia might never be ready to give to either Gina or Leni. Even after Gina tells Claudia the truth about Leni causing her accident, Claudia remains angry at both of her sisters for keeping secrets from her. Gina’s apology tour continues with Paula, which also doesn’t go exactly to plan.

When she gets an urgent phone call, she rushes to her father’s house where she finds him lying on the floor. Before she can call 9-1-1, Victor apologizes to Gina for something she witnessed involving her mother and says that he should have gotten her help because it ruined her life. However, Gina doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and he passes in her arms. Just then, Leni arrives and the sisters finally face off.

As she processes her father’s death, Leni immediately leaps into “getting their story straight” since there are “too many eyes on us to explain another body.” Gina pulls a gun on Leni and confronts her sister about Dylan. Leni tackles Gina and the gun slides under the couch. As they struggle, Leni knocks over the fireplace and the house quickly engulfs in flames.
