Netflix Echoes episode 4 recap: Body

Echoes episode 4 picks up where we left off at the end of Echoes episode 3, with a desperate Leni looking for Mattie after Gina seemingly takes off with her. Luckily, that’s not what happened. Gina just wanted to say goodbye to Mattie and she returns to her mother within moments, unharmed. But Gina is in the wind once again.

The next morning, everyone is alarmed by what appears to be a big fire on the edge of the McCleary property. Jack and Leni get in the truck to go check it out. Leni notices Jack has a shiner on his forehead but he claims it’s nothing. Before she can press further, they arrive at a clearing and realize something is seriously wrong.

Floss and a bunch of other cops are there. As you might have guessed from the episode title, they found a body. Dylan James is dead and someone burned him inside his red truck after killing him. Floss informs Leni and Jack that the fire didn’t kill him. He had a knife wound across his abdomen, meaning someone took care of him beforehand.

Floss immediately notices Jack’s new facial wound and she’s not buying his story about a horse kicking him in the face. Floss saw the argument between Jack and Leni at the party, the fight where he accused her of having an affair with Dylan. So, yeah, there’s motive.

Similarly, Leni has been acting just as suspicious and Floss isn’t going to let it rest. They watch as she takes some pictures of Jack’s truck outside. Leni demands Jack tell her what’s going on so they can be on the same page. he admits to getting into a shoving match with the owners of the stolen foal, Towers and Payne, the night before. That’s where the cut on his head really came from.

Towers and Payne want the full value of the stolen foal since it got killed early on when Gina left the farm. Jack still thinks Leni tried to steal the horse and run away with it. She tells him she didn’t.

Well, things get even worse for them later when Leni goes to visit Dylan’s grandma and returns to find Floss and Paula arresting Jack. The tracks at the scene match his work truck and they found vials of ketamine on Dylan that came from Jack’s office. We know that Leni was the one who actually got the ketamine. Floss also wants to talk to Leni and Gina, too, so she warns Leni she’ll be in touch.

Victor and Leni get into an argument afterward. Victor doesn’t know what to think. He even alleges she could have killed Dylan. He saw her steal the ketamine, after all, and she has the same access to all the work trucks that Jack does.

Their fight is cut short by a phone call from the local hospital. One of the nurses calls Victor to tell him they have his daughter. The nurse thinks it’s Leni, having recognized her on TV, but Victor and the real Leni both realize immediately that it’s Gina.

Leni and Victor call Charlie, since he’s still in town, and the three of them go to the hospital to get Gina. But unfortunately, she’s already gone, having ripped out her IV and fled. According to the staff, she was disoriented and bleeding when she came in.

Charlie confronts Leni, demanding she tell him anything she might know about Gina and Dylan. “What would she be so desperate to run away from that she was willing to pull out an IV?” He pleads with Leni to help him find out what happened to Gina. Well, Leni doesn’t really have time to deal with her sister right now since Jack is at the precinct and needs a lawyer.

She rushes there to check in on him and tell him she’ll get a lawyer, asking once again for the truth regarding the horses. They have a heart-to-heart, but Jack still thinks Leni stole the foal intentionally and that she was sleeping with Dylan. Leni just sort of goes along with it for now as they apologize to each other and she promises to fix things. Floss returns to take Jack to the back for questioning.

While waiting for Jack, Leni gets a call from Dylan’s cell. It’s Gina. She tells Leni she needs help and asks her to go to Grandma Georgia’s where she’s staying. Once there, Leni finds out that that two men, Towers and Payne, came for Gina and hurt Georgia. Again, Gina is gone.

Leni decides to fix things after Gina tells her where to find Towers and Payne. She gives them the cashier’s check for $60k. It’s not the entire amount they want, but Leni threatens to tell the police everything regarding the stolen foal if they don’t just take the money and go. It seems to work, at least for now.

But on her way back home, Leni gets pulled over by Floss and Paula. They search her car and appear to find something incriminating as they then arrest her for the murder of Dylan James. Jack is released.

At the police station, Floss confronts Leni with the evidence they found. A photo of her giving the check to Towers and Payne, or Leni “seeking to influence witnesses” as Floss calls it, the check she used and a broken knife handle, which belongs to the blade found under the front seat of her car. “We’ll run tests, but I’m guessing that’s Dylan James’ blood.”

And as for how all of these things were discovered? Well, it turns out Gina has been a big help to the police in getting her sister arrested. Leni looks to her side and sees Gina standing outside the window, watching the whole thing go down. It looks like Gina set Leni up.
