Netflix Echoes ending explained: Who killed [SPOILER]?
By Mads Lennon
Netflix’s latest taut thriller series Echoes will definitely leave you guessing from its opening episode to the final seconds of the finale.
Spoilers ahead for Echoes
Since Echoes is a series that centers on identical twin sisters Leni and Gina McCleary (both played by Michelle Monaghan), it can get very confusing fast. What starts off as a seemingly conventional mystery where one twin goes missing quickly turns upside down when we discover that twins Leni and Gina like to switch lives on occasion.
It soon becomes very confusing and complicated to keep track of who is who and that’s by design. By the end of the show, there are many mysteries to explore and questions raised, some answered and some not. Below we’ll break down the biggest mysteries of the season.
Echoes ending: Who killed Dylan James?
Leni killed Dylan. When Gina found him, he was already stabbed and bleeding out. Gina tried to save Dylan by rushing him to the hospital but they didn’t make it in time and Dylan wanted Gina to get out of town and escape Leni for good.
Echoes ending: Who started the church fire?
Leni started the church fire. She snuck in while Gina and Dylan were having sex and dropped the lion charm her mother had given her as a kid. The fire resulted in a man dying who was trapped in the church. Afterward, Leni convinced Gina to swap clothes with her and she set it up so it seemed like Dylan was responsible for the fire, forcing him to leave town and separating him from Gina.
Echoes ending: Who drowned in the bathtub?
When Leni and Gina were kids, their dad, Victor, drowned their mother, Maria, in the bathtub. Leni saw it happen when they were children and because Gina was “bad Gina,” Victor always assumed it was her who had snuck out of bed and witnessed it.
But before dying, Victor tried to tell Gina that he and Maria had planned it. She was sick and dying and wanted some control about how she died. That’s why there were apple blossoms in the water, the way Maria wanted. All these years, Leni thought she saw their dad do something horrible and she wanted to hide it from Gina.
Echoes ending: What happened to Claudia? Who pushed her?
As you might have noticed the trend by now, Leni pushed Claudia. When they were kids, Leni and Gina were fighting over a doll while on some kind of old tower and Claudia tried to break up the fight. Leni pushed her off and she fell, hence why Claudia is now in a wheelchair.
At the time, Leni was pretending to be Gina, so Claudia thought Gina pushed her. They didn’t want anyone to know that they switched, so they kept up the lie all these years, driving the wedge deeper between Gina and Claudia.
Echoes ending: What happens to Gina’s baby?
Sadly, Gina loses her and Dylan’s baby. She had a miscarriage previously and then after Dylan gets stabbed and they crash the truck, the stress causes Gina to miscarry again. The nurse at the hospital confirms as such when we see things from Gina’s perspective in the sixth episode.
Echoes ending: What happens to the flash drive?
Remember how Gina and Leni were communicating via that online journal? In the third episode, Gina threatened to use a flash drive containing everything from the blog to destroy Leni, but then we don’t hear about it again, until the end of the season. Gina, or someone, sends Floss that flash drive, so we can assume she’s going to watch it and uncover a lot more secrets about the twins.
Echoes ending: What happens to Gina and Leni in the end?
In the Echoes season finale, Gina escapes from their dad’s house after it catches on fire. Leni chases her into the woods and they have a final showdown in the river leading to a massive waterfall. There, Leni and Gina argue about what happened to their mom and Leni tries to convince Gina to come back to her and be her sister again.
But Gina has finally had enough of Leni and she lets herself fall backward into the waterfall, seemingly killing herself. The cops never find her body. Paula and Floss concoct a plan to get evidence that officially links Leni to the church fire. Leni manages to escape, headed to the airport with Gina’s fake passport that she originally stole from Dylan at the beginning of the season.
While at the airport to take a flight to Australia and escape from the cops, the clerk mentions that another woman who looks identical to her recently went through and took a plane to Kansas. Does that mean Gina is still alive?
Then we skip ahead to a book reading in Los Angeles. Charlie published a best-seller about the twins, fittingly titled Leni and Gina. A woman in the audience stands up and asks Charlie whether they ever found a body. Charlie says no, that was Gina, his wife, and the cops never found a body. That night, Charlie is greeted by one of the twins.
He asks her about coming to his reading disguised in a hat, wig and glasses. She claims she doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Charlie says, “I’ll find out, you know, which one you are.” And she replies, “Maybe. Maybe even I don’t know anymore.”
So, Charlie is now with Gina or Leni, we don’t know which, and one of them came to his reading, again we don’t know which. They could both have been Leni or maybe Gina really is alive and she’s back with her husband… or she visited the reading and Leni is with Charlie now. It’s a mystery!
But now that Leni-or-Gina is back in Los Angeles, Charlie questions why she returned. “So many scores to settle, Charlie.” And that’s where we leave off! What’s your theory on that ending?
Does Echoes have a post-credits scene?
Sadly no, there is no post-credits scene at the end of Echoes but the song “Sisters” by Peggy Lee does play over the credits and it’s quite a fitting send-off, I think.
Echoes is now streaming on Netflix.
