Locke and Key: Who is Sam Lesser? What actor plays him?

With Locke and Key‘s third and final season now on streaming, some fans might need assistance remembering important moments and characters from earlier in the show. One character who has a significant role to play in the season 3 is Sam Lesser.

Since Sam hasn’t been significant to the show since the first season, it’s understandable that some fans are confused or can’t remember what his initial role in the show was, or where he has been for the past season.

Below we’ll give you a brief history of his character and some information on the actor who plays him! There are some spoilers for season 3 ahead, so tread with caution. 

Who is Sam Lesser in Locke and Key?

Sam Lesser was considered a primary antagonist in the beginning of Locke and Key. He murdered Rendell Locke before the series began, although it was not entirely his fault as Sam was manipulated by Dodge to go after the keys.

Growing up in an abusive household, Sam had alway been a troubled kid. As the school’s counselor, Rendell had been trying to help him, but unfortunately Sam was too far gone. After killing Rendell, Sam was arrested and imprisoned. Dodge later helped him escape and he went after the Locke family again for more keys on her orders.

Dodge later stabbed Sam and left him for dead, forcing him to go through the Ghost Door where his injured body was found by police, leaving Sam a permanent ghost on the Keyhouse grounds. As a ghost, Sam has tried to repent for killing Rendell and help the Lockes when he can, such as by leading Kinsey to the Angel Key in season 2, although she thought it was Chamberlain who helped her.

He returns in Locke and Key season 3 (SPOILER!) and takes possession of Bolton’s body to continue helping the Locke family in a more hands-on way.

Who is Sam actor Thomas Mitchell Barnet?

Thomas Mitchell Barnet is the actor who plays Sam in the show. Barnet is a Canadian actor on stage and in film. He is best known for playing Scorpio Malfoy in the Toronto production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and previously played Balthazar in Barry Avrich’s Romeo and Juliet. Some of his other projects include V/H/S/94, Run This Town, In the Dark, Saving Hope, Murdoch Mysteries and Wayne.
