Locke and Key season 3, episode 4 recap: Deep Cover
Well, as frustrating as it is to see Dodge possessing yet another victim at the start of Locke and Key season 3, episode 4, the good news is that Dodge isn’t all that great at pretending to be Bode Locke. It doesn’t take long for the entire Locke family to realize something is amiss with the youngster. I have to say, Jackson Robert Scott clearly has a blast playing possessed Bode and several scenes gave me serious Chucky vibes in the best way.
Now firmly integrated into the Locke family, the good news for Dodge is that she can take keys now without getting burnt. I guess Bode being a blood Locke is enough to counteract the fact Dodge is a demon. To be fair, the real Bode, now a ghost, does try to warn his family that something is wrong. He starts freezing Nina’s mug, for instance, but Dodge nips that in the bud quickly, warning Bode that if he tries anything else, she’ll kill his whole family.
Dodge and Gideon have similar intentions. They both want the keys, albeit for different purposes. Gideon wants all of the keys because he can use them to create a massive portal between the human world and the demon world beyond the Black Door.
He wants to break the barrier and release all the demons inside. Why? It’s never really made clear, though it seems to be related to his desire to reconnect with his kin. He makes a deal with Dodge, if she can find where the keys are being hidden then he’ll let her rule as his right hand. Dodge agrees, although I’m sure she’ll backtrack out of the deal as soon as she gets the chance.
The problem is that the last time Gideon, Coffey and Bolton were in Keyhouse, the keys were being stored in the Mending Cabinet. Since then, Kinsey and Bode have moved them to the Harlequin chest, but Dodge doesn’t know that, so she needs to convince someone to tell her (as Bode) where the keys are now. It’s harder than you might expect since the real Bode wouldn’t have much reason to look for the keys, he should know where they are.
Dodge’s frustration manifests in a very rude and sarcastic Bode, one who insults everyone in the house from Tyler to Nina to Nina’s boyfriend Josh. Initially, Nina thinks it’s just Bode struggling to accept that she’s dating someone new, but as “Bode’s” attitude worsens, she starts to grow suspicious.
It comes to a head when Rufus and Ellie visit. Rufus and Bode had plans to hang out and Dodge slips up, revealing how Dodge used to keep keys in the floorboards. Bode would have no way of knowing this, only Rufus and Ellie did and Rufus knows he never told Bode. He realizes that Bode isn’t Bode and Dodge snaps, attacking him and trying to kill him.
Nina and Ellie rush inside to break up the fight, but not before Dodge warns Rufus not to say anything. Dodge makes up a lie, claiming Rufus randomly had a tantrum and attacked him, but Nina isn’t buying it.
While all of the Bode/Dodge drama is occurring, Tyler gets a surprise visitor. Carly (Oriana Leman) drives all the way to Massachusetts from Montana to see him. She turns out to be a welcome visit for Tyler as she makes him realize that he’s lucky to have a family who cares about him so much. He decides to stick around and make things right rather than run away back to Montana again. Before Carly leaves, she and Tyler kiss.
After that, he convinces Kinsey to give him back his memories. I’m not sure what the point of Tyler forgetting them was, it didn’t seem to amount to much in the grand scheme of his arc and this season’s storyline, but whatever. At the end of the episode, Kinsey retrieves the Memory Key from the Harlequin chest as Dodge/Bode watches from the beneath the staircase to restore Tyler’s memories. Now Dodge knows where the keys are hidden.
The Rufus fight is the final straw for Nina. She knows something is seriously wrong with Bode and goes snooping around his bedroom (to be fair, he did that to her first!). She ends up finding Dodge’s real body stuffed under the bed just as “Bode” arrives and asks what she’s doing in his bedroom. Uh-oh, better think fast Nina!
Odds & Ends from Locke and Key season 3, episode 4
- There’s some growing tension between Ellie and Rufus as Ellie tells her son she officially sold their house in Matheson. Rufus wants them to buy a new one, but Ellie is already thinking about where they can go next for a fresh new start. Rufus doesn’t want to leave town and grows upset that Ellie wants them to.
- First Scot (Petrice Jones) sighting of the season! I was wondering if we would see him again since he left for England. Kinsey and Scot are still regularly FaceTiming and talking, so that’s a good sign.
